That's a lot of votes for half a day on Sunday. A couple weeks ago the whole weekend only got 80% of this total. A lot of people checking in for news on con registration perhaps?
Altitude is supposed to be dropped next round, so there will be 2 adds at least. Iron Butt needs 3 votes to avoid being dropped and only has 1 so far. Hopefully Big Bear and Dogfight can make the next 2 slots. This is already the 6th consecutive round where Big Bear's vote count has increased or held steady so the momentum is unmistakable. The top 200 is out of reach for Gamesmaster so hopefully another villain like Vypra or Gristle can sneak in for the final slot. Unless Austin slips, only 3 more characters will get to enter in time to compete for the top 200. So, last night, for some intellectual closure, I rewatched the Gamesmaster.
I have to say that I am unconvinced. There are some decent things about the episode. I think JJ cites the love the creators have for the episode, the quality of the animation, the humor, and its overall regard as a quality installment. I disagree with most of those points. I do agree some of the interaction away from the Gamesmaster (between Zartan and Destro, then between Zartan and Gung Ho and Duke) are pretty decent. I thought, as a later Sunbow season 1, that the animation would be really good. Unfortunately, there were several spots: especially when Cobra Commander is overseeing his procession (including AVACs!!!) where the characters are not rendered well at all. As for the overall rating of the show... Call me cynical, but I have to chalk that up to Baroness in a bikini and Lady Jaye being captured in a dressing room in her underwear. I don't find much else to really like about that episode, but it is undeniable that there are some nearly naked cartoon ladies for much of the show. One of the harshest continuity problems, in fact, is that Lady Jaye is captured in her dressing room in her nightie ("Clothes are like candy to her, Coco." An awful line: sexist, out-of-character for Jaye, and stupidly setting up Gamesmaster's infant-like characterization). Later when she shows up on the island, she is clothed regularly. (I guess the producers shut down the idea of two nearly-naked ladies running for their lives the entire episode.) Gamesmaster has a lot of craziness, and his biggest problem is a complete, total lack of justification. Maybe campy is the wrong word. Absurd is better. In other unrealistic episodes of Joe, there are always justifications: Phantom Brigade - ghosts, sure, but tied to mortal world by trinkets that link them. Worlds Without End - alternate universes have a basis in theoretical physics. Even ancient creatures buried in the well of Destro's ancestral home make more sense to me than the answer to: Who is the Gamesmaster? Watch the show, and the only sensible conclusion is that he is an alien! As an episode, for me it is closer to when the Joes went into outer space to commune with the ancient Egyptian gods (a very low-regarded episode), than one of the all-time greats. When Flint makes it to Gamesmaster's headquarters, Games throws a tantrum and says he's going to "tell on" Flint. To whom? In some shots in that scene, it looks like Gamesmaster is 20-feet tall. At the very least, when he grapples with Flint, it seems that he must be at least 10-feet tall. How, and where did his toys and resources and the island come from? How did his toy soldiers know where to catch Flint, CC, Baroness, Lady Jaye, and how did they sneak onto the Cobra base? When the Joes and Cobras finally wage a joint assault against the island, Games takes delight in fighting them. But it seems like a surprise to him. It doesn't seem like drawing both sides to the island was his plan at all, or even something he considered, despite it being a natural heightening of his plot and a foreseeable outcome after kidnapping Cobra Commander, et al... I could probably go on all day. I watched several other episodes last night, too. Not great ones, but all more grounded, funny, and enjoyable than the Gamesmaster. Including Lasers in the Night, where Cobra Commander lasers his face on the moon (years before Chairface Chippendale), and the one where Airborne's brother has telekinesis. So that's my analysis of Gamesmaster. He is an unfunny joke. |

Games master is a clone of the X-men villain arcade. He has a murder world, a robot sidekick, and a wacky tie.

He's definitely inspired by Arcade. A little of Kingpin too, in his appearance and the way he's unusually strong for a large, rotund fellow. Of course, Cobra was a direct derivative of Hydra. And Star Wars was a rip off of Flash Gordon and Indiana Jones was a rip off of James Bond. Quentin Tarantino's movies are pretty much just pastiches of scenes copied from old, obscure movies, but they get great reviews. The key is to rip off something good, which Gamesmaster did.
The idea that there's something "sexist" about Lady Jaye's scene is ludicrous. That's one of the most overused and incorrectly used words these days. The idea that someone's going to use a truly vile epithet like that to describe a scene that shows something that the vast majority of women like to do, shop for clothes, is preposterous. The PC police is one organization I'd like to see permanently disbanded. Besides, this is all the Gamesmaster's commentary. If he says something sexist, so what, he's the villain? As for LJ's clothes, she was clearly boxed up in her changing room where she would've had her clothes still at her feet. And this is not out of character for her, as she's dressed up very feminine in other off-duty episodes. The idea that we need to know where Gamesmaster gets his funding is also ludicrous. We know as much about where Gamesmaster gets his funding as where Cobra gets theirs. Anyone can come up with half-a-dozen plausible scenarios in as many seconds if they really want to waste time thinking about it. Very few action movies go into that much background detail on their megalomaniacal villains. Gamesmaster didn't seem nearly as shocked at Joe and Cobra tracking him down as Zartan did in the last episode of Revenge of Cobra. Games does seem surprised when his forces are beaten. Obviously the guy is not a completely rational character. To criticize a story where a villain tries to pull off an evil scheme and is then defeated in the end would invalidate pretty much every single episode of G.I. Joe. As for criticizing aspects of the animation, again, almost every Joe episode is subject to problems with animation consistency and quality. God Below is indeed poorly regarded, as confirmed by being near the bottom of the ratings on TV.com. Gamesmaster, however, is the 7th most highly rated episode. What's sexist is strictly the Gamesmaster's line about clothes. Lady Jaye has not established as a character-trait that she is especially interested in clothes. It's a feminine trope. I'm not saying a derivative, badly-characterized villain can't be sexist and imbecile. Just that I find the Gamesmaster to be so and it is not to his credit.

Stalker - you put way more effort into that than it required. In short, it was a weak episode.
Add El Jefe and the Jugglers. |
