It's probably too late to pull "G.I.Joe 3", but after you guys complete that fool's errand (no offense) for trilogy's sake, here's how you revive the brand:
no more movies ----- instead, a live action TV series reboot of GI JOE on the CW. 1.) a movie has a "shelf life" of mayyyyybe 2-3 months before the next thing comes along & bumps it out of the public consciousness. 2.) whereas a TV series gives you an HOUR a week for 22 weeks. 3.) the math: a Movie = 2 hours of brand exposure/storyline at a time, with 3 years to lose momentum in between sequels. In that same 3 year span, a TV series will give you 66 hours....with only a 3-4 month summer hiatus in between seasons. MOVIE = 2 hours per 36 months TV = 66 hours per 36 months 4.) the business plan: A core cast of 6 Joes & 6 Cobras. Core, not TOTAL, like the movies. These will be most likely: Leader - Hawk 2nd in command - Stalker Muscle - Gung-Ho/Roadblock Comic relief - Shipwreck/Clutch/Alpine/Quick Kick Ace in the hole - Snake Eyes Intelligence - Scarlett Similar on the Cobra side with Cobra Commander Baroness Destro Major Bludd Storm Shadow Zartan NOW.....that's not EVERYONE. The beauty of a TV series is that you can bring in a niche/fringe character like a Snow Job or a Crystal Ball for an episode here or there where their specific expertise is needed, then have them fade out again for episodes or even seasons on end. Also, "cameos" of characters like Tyrone or Candy Apple or Scarface can happen with EASE. If you're a fan of Airtight or Interrogator, you're NEVER gonna see them get silver screen time. It's just not gonna happen. BUT, if this show gets picked up & lasts 5-6 seasons, that's 110-132 episodes - nearly one episode for each ORIGINAL MARVEL COMIC issue & each ARAH character to get his 15 minutes. In Season 2, maybe you add Flint, Lady Jaye, Zarana, Tomax, & Xamot to the core cast & expand it from 12-15, while still giving Doc, Breaker, Mindbender, & Firefly 4-5 episodes of recurring work per season. 5.) why it will work: Arrow already basically IS G.I.*JOE in a sense. You've got Oliver as the Duke/SnakeEyes hybrid - the leader who is also very skilled, mysterious, & deadly Diggle is Roadblock-esq Felicity is basically Breaker/Mainframe Sarah was like Scarlett Laurel is Lady Jaye Arsenal is Kamakura/Falcon Thea is Storm Shadow Merlin is Cobra Commander Tatsu is Jinx Yao-fait was like hard master Pardon my spelling: Verdant is the PIT Lian-yu is Cobra Island The freighter is the FLAGG Queen Consolidated is Extensive Enterprises Nanbat-par is the arashikage temple Their use of FLASHBACKS is brilliant! This series could jump in pretty much present day & basically copy Arrow's flashback blueprint for catching the audience up on Snake Eyes' LRRP/family's car crash/ninja training & CC's used car salesman/spiral into despair origins without making all the non-fanboys sit through a whole season of backstory set up, while giving us hard core fans our geek-out moments of seeing Larry Hama's comic book stories acted out with real people in real settings. Every hour long (42 minute) episode could be 30-32 of "present day" action, with 10-12 minutes of flashback stories to retroactively flesh out the characters. This could also work for characters like Storm Shadow, Stalker, Baroness - ANYONE who needed backstory explanation really. The ACTION wouldn't suffer from being "low budget TV" - Arrow has crazy awesomely coreographed sword & fist & foot fights. Arrows & guns. Motorcycles & car chases. Plus, with what the Flash can do with EFX, the action scenes would NOT be lacking with a T.V.*JOE!series. This CAN happen & it CAN be good! |

Then dear Hasbro design and ship figures and vehicles that appear to match what is shown on the series. Package multiples of nameless / faceless troopers to make more money. Release every character ever seen even once like the Star Wars lines have done since the 70's.
Expand to card games, board games, building blocks, shirts, hats, underwear, bed spreads and whatever else you can mark as GI Joe.

And Hasbro, would it kill you to lose some weight? I mean 30 years is a long time, but I don't think you should just give up on your body. You used to be so pretty.

ok now on to the thread topic. I think that this could be one of the greatest things that could happen to both Hasbro and the Joe brand, if they ever actually put forth the effort to bring it back like they have the Transformers brand.

You guys ever watch the Unit ? great show and it came pretty close to being a more realistic modern or current version of GIJoe. They even had a pit, that they called the Pit. (although it wasn't like THE Pit, this was just a underground command and control center not a full multi-level underground base/bunker) They had codenames, cover stories for what they were publicly doing. It just felt like the old Joe comics. Like the first 10 or 15 issues. Anyways that should be an example held up to Hasbro as a possible way to do a live action TV show for GIJoe.

I must have missed the HISS Tanks, Skystrikers, and Terror Dromes in Arrow.
I mean, maybe some people are totally cool with "Low-fi" G.I. Joe. But to me, G.I. Joe isn't Arrow (nevermind that some of the comparisons are...quite a stretch). It isn't the Unit. It's G.I. Joe. I'm not saying the movies got it exactly right, but if you strip away the sci-fi/military super-tech aspects of the show just to get something on-screen, you're not getting anything more faithful than RoC or Retaliation was (arguably less). G.I. Joe is supposed to have vehicles (and lots of them), larger-than-life plots, and climaxes that look more like the clash of armies than two groups of people running at each other on an empty street. A lot about RoC may not have been up to par, but the structure and trappings of a classic G.I. Joe cartoon miniseries were followed almost to a "T." Part of what makes Arrow work is that it's relatively anchored to a single location (Starling City). Just because that works doesn't mean that formula works for G.I. Joe. Yeah, you might get the characters right (big maybe), but you lose a lot of the other stuff...because worldwide location shooting (or even digital mattes and fakery) costs money. Vehicles (much less vehicles that don't actually exist in real life) cost money. And suddenly getting G.I. Joe right means the show costs more than Game of Thrones per episode (which is currently the most expensive show on TV). Far better to focus on making a new, good animated series. |

I agree...a really well done, intelligent animated series (real animation, no CG crap)that's smart enough for adults yet tame and appealing enough for kids would be their best bet. They were onto something with Resolute and Renegades, it's a shame nothing else became of them.
A weekly, live-action tv series just wouldn't seem right. |

Can we get female figures with wrist hinges?
Hasbro, you have done some great things with G.I. Joe! The modern era sculpts are incredible right along with all the points of articulation! The Pursuit of Cobra/30th lines were incredible! The vehicles like the P.O.C/30th Hiss Tanks, the P.O.C Ghost Hawk and P.O.C/30th Vamp are great (..the only minor negatives are that the P.O.C Hiss tank should have had some clear windows on the driver's canopy & The P.O.C Ghost Hawk should have had some clear windows like the 25th Anniversary one did)! Thanks forgiving us the 30th Sky Striker; I was never able to get it as a kid! I enjoyed a lot of the Rise of Cobra figures, play sets, and vehicles (..I still do)! I can go on and on! Thank you Hasbro/G.I. Joe! What I would like to see in the future: 1) Female figures with wrist hinges 2) All figures with wrist hinges 3) a newly tooled two seat Dragonfly with Wild Bill (..styled after the AH-1Z Viper Zulu) 4) retool, repaint and redistribute the: G.I. Joe Thunderwing Jet, the G.I. Joe Patriot Grizzly as a modern Mauler or Mobat, the P.O.C/30th/Retaliation Hiss Tanks with moving treads and some clear canopy windows, the Cobra Moray (..same original color), the Night Attack Chopper (..gut out the back & make it capable of carrying three to five figures; make the NAC a Cobra vehicle), the P.O.C Ghost Hawk with the 25th Ghost Hawk canopy (..someone did an excellent custom like that here), the G.I. Joe Retaliation Ninja Combat Cruiser 5) some kind of new Cobra jet for Cobra 6) Concept vault Gung Ho, Cobra Officer (..repaint of the P.O.C/30th Cobra trooper), Storm Shadow, Rock and Roll, Clutch and Zartan 7) Modern articulated and sculpted versions of Arah: Duke, Scarlett, Roadblock (..Retaliation Roadblock with new head sculpt) Last edited by 1FormidableJoe; 02-13-2015 at 09:32 PM.. |
