I was doing some research on Oktober Guard today and found out about their prototypical incarnation, Pravda Patrol.
Herb Trimpe and Tom Defalco created Pravda Patrol in a creator-owned Marvel comic called Bizarre Adventures #31 in April, 1982, 2 months before G.I. Joe #1 was published. It was a 5-page black-and-white story. Trimpe was the plotter on the first G.I. Joe Oktober Guard story, not Hama, and he re-used Pravda Patrol as "guest stars," drawing the whole G.I. Joe issue with them. Hasbro objected because they would not own the characters, so all of the characters were redrawn and renamed into the Oktober Guard we know today. The issues were delayed 3 months due to the changes so their introduction moved from issue #3 to issue #6. It's all the more interesting that the original name for Horror Show was Big Bear and that his design, with the cossack hat with a star on it and facial hair, appears pretty similar to the 1992 figure we later got. It's accepted that Big Bear in 1992 was a replacement for the deceased Horror Show, but Horror Show himself originally replaced Big Bear in 1982. I am unclear if, when or how Hasbro got the rights to use the character. I also don't know how closely his bio matches up with whatever was said about Big Bear in the original story. But, essentially, it appears that a 1992 figure made his first appearance in comic books before every other figure in the G.I. Joe line. Source: http://thegeeksverse.com/2012/11/04/...young-readers/

Apparently the below link was the original source for this story, from someone who found the original draft of the G.I. Joe Oktober Guard issue with the original designs back around 2000.
