Hey there. I've read a few comments stating that Snake-eyes v2 visor was used in WWI by...the French? I think that's what I read. Anyway, does anyone have more information on this? Perhaps some websites or sources that show images and explain its origins? I'm finding myself oddly interested in this, but I can't seem to track down anything on the web.
Thanks! |

Here's an actual pic, as well as a couple of custom 1/6th figure pictures I found sometime ago via googling "555th PIB": Last edited by zuludelta; 04-29-2009 at 08:47 PM.. |

BTW, I don't mean to suggest that the 555th PIB was the only unit that used these visors. A lot of the early units attached to the 82nd Airborne Division used them as well. I think it's just that the 555th PIB are probably the most known for using them.

That's pretty cool info too! Always good to learn about these things. However, I was pretty sure I read something about them using nearly the exact visor, not covering the mouth, and that they were leftover medieval armor or something like that. Any additional info? (That 555th stuff is cool!).

The closest armor designs made expressly for the war that I can think of that are remotely similar to Snake-Eyes' V2 visor are the ones worn by some Belgian soldiers circa 1917 (it's hard to notice in the pictures, but there are very fine slits cut into the visor to allow the wearer to see): Last edited by zuludelta; 04-30-2009 at 03:27 PM.. And just for giggles, here are a couple of examples of experimental American armour from around the same time (pictures taken from the US Army Medical Department archives):

One thing you'll note with all the various examples of visors I've posted so far is that they are all attached to helmets. They'd have to be stabilized against a firm base for them to be effective as protection from projectile and blunt forces. Had they been attached to a cloth head covering the way Snake-Eyes' is attached to his balaclava, it would have been more ornamental and/or for basic eye protection than anything else (it wouldn't provide much projectile and blunt force protection... striking the visor would simply drive the visor into the wearer's face and still transmit the kinetic energy of the blow to the wearer's head because of the lack of a helmet).

I still think Snake-Eyes' visor owes more to certain World War II designs than anything from World War I, though (particularly because Snake-Eyes' visor isn't attached to a helmet). Take, for instance, the T45E6 eye armor produced near the end of the war (picture attached below). It was basically an opaque manganese steel plate with slits cut into it to allow the wearer to see, fitted onto aviator goggle straps (picture taken from Wound Ballistics, published by the US Army Medical Department)
