In my head, '84, '85 & '86 are a sort of "golden age." I think '85 was the pinnacle, what with the neck articulation and all the great toys already mentioned, but '86 was as good as it got for me. It was also the beginning of the end in a way. It was like there was a slow decline after '85 with each year getting progressively more and more goofy. Could be that impression just simply coincides with me growing up and losing interest however. Regardless, I remember every year getting better from '82 to '85 and then a steady decline after that. I hung around for '87 with Law, Chuckles and Outback, and even '88 (picking up Shockwave), but I was effectively done after that.

Agree on 1985. We got a new cast of characters with all new sculpts, lots of new vehicles, the cartoon, the comic was great....

82, 83 & 84 were my favorite years. 1982 because that's when my love for Joes started. 1983 is probably my favorite year with the Skystriker, Dragonfly and Hiss Tank. The first batch of Cobra figures were all available, most of my favorites and very popular. I liked Torpedo, Snow Job and Airborne a lot. 1984 was a great year for Cobra too and I loved the Killer Whale, Water Moccasin, Stinger, Rattler and ASP.

88 was my fav year by far. I loved just about every single vehicle, Rolling Thunder, Phantom x-19, defiant, maggot, wolf, BUGG, Mobile Command Center,Mamba. That is a pretty strong vehicle year compared to previous years

I would 83 to 85 was a great year for figures, but 85 to 90 was the most awesome years for vehicles for both Joe and Cobra!

82-87 for sure, but it would be impossible to choose just one.
It would be like telling one of your children that you love their brother or sister better than them. 82 - OG 13 enough said......... 83 - Dragonfly and Skystriker....... 84 - Firefly, Storm Shadow, and the Whale....... 85 - Flagg, a great mix of figures, + Slaughter........ 86 - Terror Drome, Tomohawk, great figures, + Da Fridge...... 87 - Cobra LA and more great figures........ Can I pick a tie between 1984 and 1985? 1984 was incredible for Cobra: Baroness, Storm Shadow, Firefly, Zartan; so many classics Joes: Roadblock, Recondo, spirit, Duke, Ripcord.
But then 1985 had SE and Timber, Flint, Lady Jaye, Dusty, Shipwreck, the CG. I would say best year for Cobra: 1984; best year for Joe 1985. I have thought about this a lot, I think over the years I have narrowed it down to almost the exact moment GI Joe peaked. It was as 84 was winding down and we started seeing the new 85 stuff. Like the OP said the comic was at its peak right then, the cartoon was going to daily, we had just come off of the high point of military realistic GI Joe and it was just opening up to the wider fantasy elements...Then the 85 stuff came out with so much expanded capability and new stuff for the snow and water environments, the figures all got improved articulation with the ball heads. Man right about that time I was living and breathing GI Joes, reading the comics watching the cartoon, scoring single carded figures and wondering what the guys on the card back were going to look like in person. So in mu mind the greatest era for Joe was when I had all the 84 stuff, and started scoring the first 85 figures.
