For me, personally, 84 was my favorite year. Firefly, Storm Shadow, Scrap Iron, Baroness, Ripcord, Roadblock, Recondo, Blowtorch --- a ton of great figures. And then you have the WHALE and the Rattler. And don't forget the battle stations --- I had the watch tower, the bivouac and the howitzer. Just a great year. My favorite year.
But yeah, as far as what was released in 1985, it's probably Joe's best year. Now as far as sales go, 86 was Joe's best year.

I hated the cop-out idea of repainting old vehicles and figures into new "forces" and "patrols." I don't think I'd rate any year from 1988-up above any year before that for that reason. Dumping repainted toys on the market and giving them the same unoriginal color schemes was the pinnacle of cheaping out on the line with repetitive unoriginality. We're used to that sort of thing with modern toys, but it was a huge step-down in 1988 from what toys had done up to that point and started a terrible precedent...the repaint era.

85 no question. I'd give anything to walk down a TRU isle in 1985 again. It was heaven.

Repaints weren't all bad. I was younger so my first figures were about 87. My only Flint and Bazooka were Tiger Force and my only Viper, Dial Tone and Falcon were Sonic Fighters. Not to mention all of the Python Patrol guys. I never had any of the originals until Ebay!

85' is the best in my opinion, but I always was fond of 89'. A great version of SE, the best version of RnR, a solid Stalker not to mention Slaughters Marauders and Night force. Night Viper and Alley Vipers, Python Patrol and some great reissued vehicles. 1990 is vastly underrated.
great lineup you mentioned there..

Anyway, back on topic—I’ll go with 1984. Toy-wise, this year was chock full of iconic fan-favorite characters, especially on the Cobra side. Though we didn’t actually get Flint, Snake Eyes w/Timber, L Jaye, Shipwreck, the Twins or Dreadnoks in figure form, they did appear in the ’84 mini-series (and comics, I believe?). The Origin of Snake Eyes storyline was in 1984. Things might have peaked in 1985/86, but in terms of the rate of growth in popularity/interest in the brand, I’d bet that 1984 could rival if not surpass 1985. I almost feel like they could have gone a little bigger with the toys and media in 1984--and some of what might have been in 1984 instead appeared in and helped bulk out 1985.
