I was just about to say . . . if they don't produce another Duke, Cobra, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow set then I've lost all hope in the GI JOE brand as a whole. How else am I going to keep the core values of a forgotten time when honor, and integrity actually meant something. But to the OP's question, yes I did sleep with Katie.

Because of Zartan, I grew up to become a paranoid schizophrenic. Also I can imitate any voice.

SOME believe that because GI Joe is more realistic than Star Wars or Transformers, it promotes violence and guns. This often tends to be a double standard as these same people tend to NOT have problems with Star Wars or Transformers, which are often just as violent as GI Joe. In the US, there is a tendency to reflect views on politics and whatnot onto other things within our culture. Our politics and military actions have not been popular within our country, and GI Joe (by just the name) has strong associations to the military and therefore the politics behind it.

No, it kept me focused on the goal of being a Soldier, it focused all of my allowances and gift money to the toy line instead of other negative influencers and the cartoon PSAs were practical - I was never electrocuted jumping my bike over wires in the street.

I've never seen any evidence to support that.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the values G.I. Joe is supposed to represent. In many ways it's no different from Star Wars (and most of us here realize that...but try telling that to other folks that aren't into the franchise). The problem is that there's a certain lack of fantasy to the story of heroic military members vs a ruthless terrorist organization, because we see that fight play out not in our weekday afternoon or Saturday morning cartoons, but rather in our evening news broadcasts now. As noted, the members of the military are well-regarded, yes. But the politics behind the military establishment are not, and through no real fault of its' own, G.I. Joe is linked thematically in people's heads with that military establishment. It's ironic, in that G.I. Joe (ARAH) is all about the celebration of the individual heroic soldier, and Hama's books often portrayed the conflict between politicians and the soldiers that are duty-bound to answer to them. A lot of people just don't see that stuff though, and write G.I. Joe off as little more than propaganda. |
