I assume it could be stated that it only became a store exclusive after HTS had a chance to carry it and refused, but that seems unlikely. I am sure Hasbro doesn't dictate production based on whether HTS will carry it and likely require larger orders retailers like Toys R Us or BBTS can purchase. The other question becomes what regular retail toylines has HTS ever refused to carry other than store exclusives if your assertion that they have refused to carry exclusives, not that they weren't allowed to carry them? That is important because we need to understand whether HTS has a history of not carrying specific lines. Again, I don't recall such. HTS may get small quantities of items, but they stock every regular retail Hasbro toyline. So there is no history of assuming that the lack of product is based on their refusing to carry it. The only product not to reach HTS are store exclusives, and that is because they are exclusive and exclude every other store for carrying them direct from Hasbro which is how HTS gets their inventory. |

To date, HTS hasn't carried any Transformers Platinum release (despite TRU and every other online retailer having them), they didn't carry any of the Joe 7 packs from prior years (oddly, they DID carry Hall of Heroes, which makes me think the line was planned for retail), and Hasbro hasn't even used them as a "dump venue" for product either. Basically, it seems to me HTS has moved to simply being an "online outlet for retail product", and I don't see their actions as indicative of much. They dropped GI Joe because they didn't have GI Joe product to sell, just like Walmart and Target. I personally think even if Hasbro had offered GI Joe to all the online guys (BBTS and TRU seem to have some sort of partnership, as they've shared exclusives before), HTS still wouldn't have carried it. And we'd still have collectors freaking out over it.

Dumping the line because a handful of new releases became TRU exclusive certainly wins the crown as the dumbest reason I've ever heard to quit collecting something. Not sure how to top that...unless I say the paint on Lady Jaye's face was so bad that I was unable to resist selling off 1,000 other figures in protest. I think some of you guys are just too embarrassed to admit you're broke and need the cash, so you spin up these other bizarre, goofy reasons for selling off your collection. I've seen guys on some boards talking about selling off their collection and then buying it all back later on when they regain interest. I admit I did that on a small scale when I was a kid trying to scrape up cash. But trying to scrape up cash is the only real reason to be so fickle about a collection. The whole point of collecting is to buy stuff so you can get a complete set, however you define complete, and keep it.
Seriously, Hasbro has gone out of their way to keep the line to "our standards", even on the movie stuff (even Retaliation, the minor articulation reduction only lasted a wave and a half before we were back to "ME Standard"), and yet, we have collectors posted about how they've sold their collections because the line went TRU exclusive, or Hasbro stopped "classic" stuff in favor of movie stuff or any other issue the line has seen since 25th. What incentive does Hasbro have to keep us happy when so many seem willing to drop the whole thing at moment's notice?

Did you guys ever think of trimming down the 100 Vipers and 20 Destros to a more reasonable, slimmed-down collection? No one ever said you had to buy every every variation of each character or army build to infinity. Back in the '80s I passed on Tiger Force and Night Force because I wasn't interested in team-colored repaints. That didn't mean I stopped collecting the core collection. If anything I can see selling off the old, outdated vintage figures because the new ones look so much better, but that's just me. I've sold off an entire collection before only to get back into it later, and it wasn't because I needed cash, but simply because I was feeling overwhelmed by it all and it was easier to just unass everything. I ended up learning I'm happier with a smaller collection because I enjoy it more and I just don't want a bunch of toys all over the goddamn place. I'm like that with all possessions though, less is more. Regardless, "I hate TRU, and the new Joes are only at TRU, and since I hate TRU that means I can't buy 'em, which naturally follows I gotta sell off every damn bit of Joe shit I own!" does appear more than a little reactionary, so there could be more to it. Maybe the dude was already losing interest and this was simply "the final straw." |
