In 1987 a seven man rescue team, accompanied by a CIA agent rappelled from a helo in a Central American jungle to track down a Cabinet Minister who had gone off course and crashed on the wrong side of the border. |

No.
Rappelling, military style involves a harness usually made from a "sling-rope" and a carabiner which attaches the rappeller to the rope. The rappeller controls their ascent by braking which increases the friction of the rope through the 'biner. The rappeller can stop as needed. Fast roping is basically sliding down a thick, slick rope with nothing attaching you to it but your hands and the edges of your boots. Squeeze the rope really tight with your hands and feet to slow down. Normally a fully laden Ranger is not going to stop and a slow one off the rope is usally hit by the guy above him. Watch the initial assault scenes on the hotel in "BlackHawk Down" for reference. The Rangers are fast roping into the security positions at the four corners of the hotel when PVT Blackburn misses the rope and falls. To add onto an already not-so-fun workout on my last tour in AFG, we ended all PT sessions with a rope climb up a fast rope (remember they are slick to make less friction on the roper's gloves). This is what happens when you let guys just throw shit that sounds cool down on a file card. Makes for interesting conversation, though. EDIT: Talked to the old man, and apparently AB could have gone enlisted Infantry to Aviation, though the gunship gunner bit is still garbage. Last edited by Konigstiger; 06-29-2014 at 09:29 AM.. |
