I strongly disagree. Almost all of the most popular figures in POC, 30th and Retaliation were faithful remakes of original figures like Low Light, Sci-Fi, Lifeline, Airtight, Law and Order, Viper, Cobra Trooper, Steel Brigade, Night Viper, Crazylegs, Ultimate SS/SE/CC. There were some exceptions like Ultimate Duke, Renegades SS, Zombie Viper, Shadow Tracker, Shock Trooper. And Jungle B.A.T. falls somewhere in between as a popular repaint of a classic design. Recondo only sold because the original was hard-to-get...a classically faithful Recondo on retail pegs would've sold much better. Likewise the red Alley Viper pegwarmed, but the orange/blue one would have blown out the door rapidly.
Fans more than anything want to see accurate-looking recreations of the original figures in their original costumes brought up to modern toy design standards (hence the popularity of concept case figures like Gung-Ho, Lady Jaye, etc.). Fans are open to new characters and costumes just like they were in the original line. But what most don't want to see are the original characters redone in "realistic" military costumes and color schemes that suck the fun out of the comic-book and cartoon nature of G.I. Joe. That's what the movies tried to do and they were an epic failure. POC tried to follow in the design mindset of ROC and almost failed itself, before they went back to the proper, colorful roots of G.I. Joe that fans love and started seeing non-stop sell-outs (at least until the dull Renegades figures debuted). We don't need any more "City Strike" reimagining of Beachhead, Firefly, Duke, Dusty, Hawk, Snow Job, Alley Viper, Snow Job, Snake-Eyes, Destro, etc. in drab, dark, "realistic" colors. What sells are quality remakes of the exact original 1980s figure designs, creative new characters and very occasionally new costumes or repaints of certain original figures that keep to the spirit of the original line. |

Can't buy anything if there's nothing out there.
Since G.I. Joe is a Movie toy line, the brand is pretty much dead anyway.

Likewise. If Hasbro looses Star Wars to Kenner then toy buying will completely end for me. Kenner could screw up a ********. They have a few classic MOTU figures that are decent, but are overly priced and nearly impossible to acquire outside of secondary markets. If they do that to Star Wars then it will in fact be the End of (toy) Days.
GI Joe is rudderless right now. People say "more POC" and people say "More ARAH" but the fact remains, there are no children pushing the product. Only us "old" collectors who may sporadically get our kids involved because we're obsessive. Until kids start asking their parents for the products, asking Santa to bring them a Flagg Mk II the line will remain in this weird limbo status. I feel like the 12" guys must have felt by 1984... the line has shifted. As loyal as I am to the vintage concepts, the line must shift to keep up with the modern concepts. Until we all embrace that and allow the line to be "reborn" GI Joe will remain a step-child of Hasbro that only gets enough product released to keep us quiet, but never sated. Honestly. If anyone is getting anything right - it is Nickelodeon with "TMNT" right now - just the right balance of "let's get kids excited about what we have" and "let's honor where this came from." Truly an amazing series. But that is a completely different (rant) post. |

Last October or November sometime around there, I read over at rebel scum that Disney hasn't been too impressed with Hasbro's sales. It probably had more to do with the Phantom Menace anniversary line peg warming than anything else. But yeah the sales haven't been that great and Disney is not happy. They also put a bunch of restrictions on what Hasbro and can and can not make for star wars. They were saying Hasbro had to cancel a bunch of stuff because of it. Supposely that is why there is so little Hasbro star wars stuff in stores now. They've had to play catch up and get new Disney approved products made. The one bit of good news is that at SDCC Hasbro is rumored to be showing off a large amount of new star wars stuff, even a new large 3 3/4'' scale vehicle. |

It will be done if they don't get a semi-successful cartoon out there...cartoons drive toy sales these days and for the past 20-30 years. Even movies do little for toys (exception being star wars) Without a toon Joe is dead. There will likely be something like the club for adult collectors, but that will be all except some anniversary issuing.....IMO.

Franchises never die. They just keep getting rehashed because it's easier than coming up with something new.
