I always imagined that the comics were the core story, and the cartoon was sort of the other stuff that happened in between issues. At least until the animated movie happened and the cartoon totally flew off the rails.

I voted Artwork and Filecards and that is still mostly the case. I love reading the cards, holding them in my hand and picking out soldiers for an imaginary mission. I read all the comics as they came out and loved them so I guess Hama would be my ultimate answer.

Where's all the Sunbow people?! Dawww...
The Sunbow cartoon was the dominant Joe media presence of my childhood, so I suppose it would have been the closest thing to a "canon" for me at the time, though it didn't dictate how I played. I don’t recall reading or even seeing a Joe comic as a kid. Though I’ve read #1-90 as an adult, and loved it. A few weeks ago I re-watched the Sunbow stuff, in comprehensive fashion, in proper order for the first time, start to finish--and DAMN did I have a great time! For years, I had been seriously underrating that toon! It’s really helped me re-embrace the colorful pulp sci fi adventure team essence of 80s Joe. And is it just me, or was Zartan featured A LOT in Sunbow? I had totally forgotten how ubiquitous he was. Makes sense though, since he's awesome.

I watched the cartoon but basically went with whatever I felt at the time.

I think all 3 are important, but I went with comics as the main canon. There are characters like Beachhead, Leatherneck, and Wet Suit that were far better developed in the toon. And file cards are important for characters who didn't show up in either.

It's interesting, of the holy '80s trinity, it varies. G.I. Joe was absolutely Sunbow. Transformers was a mix of Sunbow and box art. MOTU is all box art.

I want to say that as kids, my brother and I didn't see a ton of the cartoons--just enough of them to know they existed and how the characters sounded and how they interacted with each other--but not enough really to know plots and sub-plots and come up with "canon" from it. But in my mind, that's almost exclusively how the characters I played with "sounded". Likewise, my brother and I didn't have a ton of the comics, either--just had seen enough of them to know some of the artwork and to know we enjoyed them. When we played, we dealt mostly in "bullets", like the comics would have, and less in lasers (although that might depend on which friends we were playing with at the time). My brother and I never had any Cobra La figures, so we never [had to] incorporate Cobra La into our play. But seriously, people bust on Cobra La way too much. Neither the cartoon nor the comic series were so deeply entrenched in reality that an undiscovered, sub-human species based on bio-technology that had gone dormant for 10,000 years was out of question. For crying out loud, people love using zombies in their 'Joe 'verses now. How is that that far of a throw from Cobra La??? As children, though, my brother and I created our own universe where we and several of our friends were the 'Joes--I was Falcon, my brother was Clutch, and a few of our friends were our supporting cast.
