Car Salesman, pyramid schemes, entwined history with Snake-eyes...all well and good, but if you want the greatest Cobra Commander origin story ever told, then you might want to check out the Battle Action Force comic. I won't spoil it for you but it has got just about everything; unseen twists and turns, frozen fish men, mind-reading chairs and sharp white suits to name a few. In fact, I happen to know a guy who is selling the entire comic run over on bloodforthebaron.com
for only $165 US. (excludes postage). That's just $1 US per comic. Go check it out in the Spares thread. firefight is his name and being awesome is his game (from what I've seen anyway). Ps. The Spares thread might be unsafe for viewing at work ( some silly bitch posted a raunchy pic on page 1. He will be dealt with.) |

It's the origin story I subscribe to. No offense to others here, but Cobra La just wasn't my thing at the time. While I've grown to like all things Joe, that aspect was just too sci-fi/fantasy in my Joe universe.

Hama's ARAH story and character filecards have always been it for me. But recently I've been rewriting my own personal continuity - one the uses a lot of Hama's basic outline and details, but embelished to suit my own preferences. It still happens during the same timeline, and I've gotten everything rough drafted up until the Operation Lady Doomsday, but it incorporates a lot of other elements including the Red Shadows and characters that existed in the lines from other countries. However, the Cobra Commander background I've written is drastically different, and the work that the GI Joe team does is not always so black & white - the good vs. evil elements can be turned in either direction, which makes it more interesting.
The elements of Hama's ARAH story that bothered me were always the ones you could tell he was forced to do because of the toy line tie in with Hasbro - the comic was essentially a comercial for the toys. He still managed to pull off a fine story despite this and facing monthly deadlines. But imagine what he could have done without those limitations.

I'd guess that lots of successful people have had unlikely beginnings.
If you can accept the concept of Cobra in the first place (or at least the most significant portions of it) I think a disenfranchised car salesman starting the whole thing is plausible. It also makes it seem a little more plausible and real life. Kind of like a Bruce Springsteen song about an American guy down on his luck - gone horribly, horribly wrong... Talk about a "runaway American dream"... Last edited by Stormgard; 05-05-2014 at 03:06 PM.. |

Sometimes I just don't want to know characters backgrounds and just about all of the origin ideas I've heard for CC reinforced that. It wasn't until I heard Wordburglers "Venomous Ideology" that I paid attention to comic background of Cobra Commander. (Also made me look at Chuckles in a new light as well)
