Reality is what you make and use of it. If your not using it for something you want to do, you should be looking and asking questions about that...
You only have so long here, might as well do things you enjoy doing and not worry with what others in your reality perceive/judge you doing. They will only mock or drag you down, because they can't find their own use your reality. To answer your question, no, i wont be growing out of anything, I never have really. Does it matter? probably not..i am not out to win mr. popularity or I would have tried to become a politician a long time ago. BUt I probably wouldn't enjoy that anymore then collecting my joes... They are your figures..and you want them now! They are your figures...use them when you need them...!

I'll be 42 in September. I think I collect as a way to "stay" young. My collection was absolutely massive during my 30's..but now with 2 kids (and a 3rd on the way) it has shrunk considerably. Do I think I'm "too old" to collect toys? Honestly, sometimes I do. I more or less collect thru my kids now. I get my fix and I still get a kick out of going to the toy store but the days of buying everything and anything are LONG over. I don't care or feel the need to have it all anymore.
I have a border of carded figures in my nerd cave and a few vehicles and other odds and ends on the shelf. Enough to be considered a small collection but nowhere near what some of the guys here have. I buy/collect just the right amount where it stays fun for me.

I might age out eventually. Already it's changed a lot for me. I used to visit Wal-Mart and Target all the time to catch new stock, now I just get what I can if I happen to come across something online. The big part has been the shift to customizing almost exclusively, and mainly buying figs as fodder. It means that I don't feel the need to have everything anymore, and the expense has gone down quite a bit.
Now it really feels more like a hobby and not an obsession. I mean, I do think about figures often enough, but I've replaced the thrill of the new find with the thrill of coming up with a good idea or finishing a figure that I'm happy with.

I don't foresee myself stopping unless Hasbro stops completely(and indefinitely), even then I will keep buying from the club and online. Joe doesn't define my existence or my life, but it is a part of who I am as a person. Anyone who knows me can't see anything G.I. Joe related and not think of me. How much of my life does it take up. The percentage is really small, because my wife and kids do come first and my responsibilities to them. There is nothing wrong with having a collection or even a room devoted to it. And there has been a lot of others here who have made perfect comparisions: beer stines, cars, guns. Hell how many of us know a woman who doesn't have shoe collection of sorts.
It doesn't matter what you collect, or how old you are. It's what makes you happy. And when the stress of life gets to me, I go into my Joe room (Currently in a state of remodling) sit down and look around and get lost in the stories, characters and colorful fugures, vehicles and playsets. Incidentally, my wife doesn’t care if I stop because she said that when I kick off she's selling the whole kit-n-caboodle and going on vacation. ;-p

[QUOTE=Xerofall;4659338]I notice it more when I'm super stressed out at work or in life... so it's definitely psychological.
I wonder this myself.... I don't if its the lack of product...... The quality of the product.... The time of year (its getting warmer out so i spend more time outdoors driving my Mustangs,camping,4 wheeling then being on the internet and Joe room) or the fact all of the OT got cut at work..... I just got MOST of the '14 con Joe's and im pretty Meh about them. And just got the MK II and carded CC. Im happy about the CC but again it could be just what i stated above. Ill probably feel this way until the 50th Joes start hitting the TRU's and FSS 3.0 starts getting shipped. I feel its more about the chase for me anymore. And finding the stuff on the internet isnt as exciting as finding joes in the wild at a brick and mortar store.

I've thought this same thing. If I'm ever not interested in metal, 90's rap or old Joe or Transformers cartoons I'll want to be put down.
I have friends that were into the same things as me musically and just with figures and all who just gave up because they felt like they were too old. I just don't see why. I'm almost 36, I have a great federal job, served my country, pay my bills, volunteer with Cub Scouts, obey the law and collect action figures. And as long as nobody is injured or killed by these actions I can't see EVER stopping. Quote:
She honestly doesn't give me much grief at all, she's pretty good about it, but in return I don't go crazy, crazy and just buy buy buy... I'm just comparing my life to the others around me... not many others have a Joe room (except many here)
I'm just picturing what our "old folk's homes" are going to look like... we'll be using walkers, jamming to Metallica and Snoop Dog, watching cartoons and the young people giving us our pills and changing our Depends will be like... they've really lost their minds! |
