I have begun to see some of what the show collection intervention was all about now. Several times in my life I have asked why? why do I still collect? Well why did I record Quantum leap every week or Star Trek TNG then DS9 then Voyager?
My Dad asked me when I was around 16 or 17 the same question you just asked. I look around the internet and on television and people dedicate a good portion of their time to collecting and displaying. I think it is generational. Perhaps it is a byproduct of what we watched and played with in the 80's. Just like my Dad loves westerns because that is what he grew up watching. It would certainly make for a great thesis for a budding psychologist or a budding anthropologist.

I remember having the thought, 'what happens to Grandpa's Joes?' It is odd to think about. Can't imagine myself older trying to explain the difference between 67 different versions of SE.
I don't make any excuses for enjoying toys (not that you are - just saying). People collect all kinds of things - cigars, guns, antiques, coins, first edition books, classic cars, etc. My Joes appeal to others in the same way their collections appeal to me - they don't. It doesn't mean there's something wrong with what I enjoy, it's just different. That said, I have two (awesome) boys and constantly want to focus more on them and what they're into (if they like Joes fine but I'm not going to try and influence them - let their generation enjoy what they like). Between that and the door seemingly closing on Joes with Hasbro that'll usher me out at some point I guess. I like collecting - but customizing even more. Kitbashing / modding / upgrading has become a creative outlet for design, character creation, backstories - even problem solving just to create it (I don't paint so I'm limited to Hasbro's catalog of released Joes). I've always written or drawn so I won't outgrow that. Perhaps it'll just take on a a different medium. Last edited by Dod Ear; 04-28-2014 at 03:57 PM.. |

I think I will forever be a joe fan, but I'm going to stop collecting when I hit 60. I'm going to be focusing more on my family in the next 6 years, and my purchases will slowly become less and less.
My Dad still thinks I'm insane. He's only a couple of years older than me and when I was 18, the same age he was when I was born, he asked me, "Why the hell are you still collecting joes? Focus on college, get a good damn job. No one respects a man who plays with his toys in his mothers basement all day." I don't plan on getting married, I never wanted to anyway. Call me selfish, but I don't want to go in that drama. I'll be here waiting for your collections! Last edited by CrackerJacks; 04-28-2014 at 04:11 PM.. |

She honestly doesn't give me much grief at all, she's pretty good about it, but in return I don't go crazy, crazy and just buy buy buy... I'm just comparing my life to the others around me... not many others have a Joe room (except many here)
I'm just picturing what our "old folk's homes" are going to look like... we'll be using walkers, jamming to Metallica and Snoop Dog, watching cartoons and the young people giving us our pills and changing our Depends will be like... they've really lost their minds!

I notice it more when I'm super stressed out at work or in life... so it's definitely psychological.
I used to be a HUGE Star Trek geek... but I eventually grew out of it. I watch the show still from time to time, but it's no longer the driving force it once was... I'm willing to bet if Joe goes on hold for a few years like it did in 1995 and then again in the 2000s I'll probably stop and depending on what they offer in the future I might be done for good... (?)

I have sold large portions and have thought about selling others (movie verse transformers comes to mind) but i stop when i think about my kids. they enjoy all my toys (to look at mostly) and their own toys (impressive in their own right).
it just make me a little sad to think they might miss what i had. even the movie verse transformers which my son likes a lot, but to me now, are really unnecessary. i plan on letting my two sons split my collection when i get older. they can work it out however they want. we'll see if they are like me and enjoy them.

I already have aged out, in many ways. I don't play with toys anymore, and I've long since stopped building up stories in my head about toys. That stuff ended somewhere around age 9 or 10. I actually remember realizing what happened back then and trying to force myself to come up with some G.I. Joe adventure for my figures, but I wasn't able to sustain it. My mind kept wondering into tangents on other, non-toy related, topics. It sucked then and it sucks now.
When I first got into collecting this shit as an adult, I approached it as an adult...which damn-near ruined it for me. I kept finding myself trying to not only rationalize how a Rattler's VTOL-system would be feasible in "real life", and other such crap, but I was also trying to explain why I was collecting kid's toys in the first place. Eventually I just decided there wasn't any deeper reason for it and there didn't need to be. I also decided to quit trying to force my adult head into it. G.I. Joe isn't my life. Matter of fact, it isn't even a large part of it. It's a pleasant diversion for me. I know I'll never be able to be a kid again and enjoy these toys like I once did. There's a part of me that also knows that, by all rights, it belongs firmly in my past, but I'm also glad to be able to keep a piece of it here with me right now. I can't see any harm in it. If anything, it helps me stay connected with a certain innocence...it keeps the bitter cynic within me at bay. Truthfully, this is an organic thing. Most of us quit toys as children around the same age range as a matter of course. For most, it wasn't a conscious decision, you just stopped playing with them. Same goes as adults, I suspect. One day you'll be done with your collection. Whether that means you get rid of them all or whatever is up to you. I know this much, when the time comes I suddenly realize I've gone days or months without looking at, or thinking about, these toys, that's when I quit, because it'll mean I've already quit actively collecting. |

You are just questioning it more because you don't have kids (and I guess unmarried). The married with children guys in their 30s and 40s don't seem to question it that much.
If you had kids I'm sure you would have way way way less Joes as the kids would hopefully take priority financially..... I don't have kids either, but if I did..my collection would be much smaller and more focused.....I'd certainly have a home office full of nerd stuff still--just maybe not bins and bins and bins full. I'm not sure how long Hasbro or the Club can keep reproducing Dukes or Snake Eyes. That being said though,...more than likely, most collectors are all in, or all out. You'll never ( or at least I think ) have everything, and when you think you do, you'll find something you'll find something new to collect,...( MOC, ARAH, 60's, Sideshow, ect ). Rambling right now,...but what you're going through, is perfectly normal. |

Happy Bday man! IM actually prob on the younger end of Joe collectors (28) and really fell in love with Joes again when the 25th product came out. I have been blessed to have lead an amazing life but playing Joes with my older brother back in the day are still some of my fondest memories. Some of our battles lasted 3 days!!
I am on a hunt to get every ARAH in modern articulation (ultimate versions). This has lead me to the club and customizing. Once I have everyone either with official product or custom format I will be satisfied although I do find myself replacing a few customs here and there with official product (Cross country is a perfect example). I will keep collecting as long as there are modern update hoan my collection to fill or better official exapmples released. Either way I can't wait for my collection to be 'Complete' YO JOE! I |
