Hello everyone! I just registered tonight. I am a new collector and Im interested in buying and selling vintage toys but I want to collect GI Joe. Im assuming like many of you, i grew up playing with gi joe. Now i want to collect what was once dearest to me.
Now I think my question right now is, how do you know what action figures and vehicles are worth? I know that they are only worth what people are willing to pay. But if you send in a figure to be AFA graded, how do you price the item once its been graded and how do you find a good market price graded or ungraded? There are many sites out there that say different info. I know there are some books but the market changes. |

Best way I know of is check ebay sold listings for the item and averaging that out.

Welcome and I would use ebay as the best pricing guide. It is a free market on there and things can become values on that site.

Welcome to the obsession.
As many above said, eBay is probably the best bet for determining current market values. This site has an extensive buy/sell/trade forum so you may want to do some word searches there if looking for particular items. I do not deal with AFA either so can't offer much advice there. Some advice though - 1. Pace yourself and shop around. Unless you are looking for particularly rare items, do some price comparisons and be patient. 2. Buy complete - in the long run you will spend more time and money trying to find parts if you buy shells and assume you can piece it together. Shipping adds up. I found the search for parts to be frustrating and time consuming. 3. Ask for more pictures if you are not happy with descriptions or the pictures. If the picture is crappy, it may be that the seller is trying to hide something. 4. Inventory control. Figure out what you have and need/want then document it somehow. A few apps exist (toy collector), spreadsheets are out there - or build your own checklist. It sucks to wander into an antique store and see something Joe related and not remember if you have one already. Of course, I am assuming you are not massing an army of figures and vehicles and have some control over the compulsion to buy everything Joe related. Some folks on here will admit, they do not. I wish I carried Bellomo's guide in my truck... I have run into piles of accessories and often wonder it I need them or not. Check out yojoe.com - it is pretty much the go to site for 3 3/4 inch stuff. 5. Avoid settling for "trading items" unless they are hard to find like clear helmet visors, Firefly's phone and backpack piece, Heavy Metal's mic. Some lots are just not worth the hassle to sort, organize and store. Face it, the collectors have most of the common stuff so holding onto something to trade it later is probably not going to pan out. 6. Budgets suck. 7. Take some time to look around here and see what the common problems are with the vintage figures - cracked elbows, broken or the wrong waists, broken thumbs, wrong color of accessories. 8. Be aware of reproductions - some less than forthcoming sellers will say an item is "100% complete" - that does not mean original accessories. A few guys on yojoe.com have spent some effort documenting common repro items so you can tell them apart and not get ripped off.

Hey man! It's great you're here!
My advice is don't buy on impulse, you've got tons of years to collect. Also, don't use ebay unless you have to. I've used Amazon a lot in the past, but not for FSS. |
