Dusty. Looks like he is likely to win this round - and then my three all time fave Joes will have made the ranking (Tunnel Rat and Stalker are the two others).
Not sure who to add - I'll go with Big Ben. |

Wait what is the 3rd Major influence? The Toys? (Why I believe the filecards are so important)
You bring up a good point about Kwinn and what I imagine was his inevitable replacement with Storm Shadow. I also think Hama wrote part of his character into Spirit which is why he was one of the only characters able to "get" Snake-Eyes. Those early years were some of Hama's best work until Special Missions. After Kwinn and with Storm Shadow, GIjoe got almost too NInja-y. It was subtle at first and pretty Cool. It was the Eighties ninjas were in, and no matter what Snake-Eyes is still one of the coolest ninjas ever conceived. By issues 70 the comics and the cartoons took on the tone of a marketing ploy for Hasbro to sell toys. This was probably always the intention from the start, but up until then Hama was writing some great stories while including the latest toys. In my opinion Comic trumps all but I can't ignore the Cartoons influence. A character like Gung-Ho or Cobra Commander will always be tied to their cartoon personas. Sgt Slaughter personified GIJOE for a couple years and had almost no Comic development. Duke as well. |
