Also even if I ignored everything but the comics I still don't think I'd vote for Kwinn over some of the others currently in the poll. I love issue #2 and enjoy Kwinn's adventures with Snake Eyes as much as the next person but is that story truly better than Dusty's comic story of having to watch Sneak Peek gunned down in battle, or Ace's comic story where he has a midair showdown? Are those couple of issues with Kwinn better than the decade worth of issues featuring Buzzer and his antics with the Dreadnocks? To me that's already a tough argument to make but then add to that the fact that those characters also had toys and great stories in the cartoons and they come out far ahead IMO.

Question: Should Shockwave automatically advance this round since he technically "won" (in a tie) last round, but there just wasn't room for him then?

And don't forget, Kwinn was died in issue 19 (in a comic that ran 155 issues. He was dead before the second year of G.I. Joe even passed. His life span was over only 12% of the way through the entire run. it makes it tough to way he accomplished more in that short span than several others, I agree.
I am thinking Shockwave should get in next, unless someone blows by him. It's tough to show much support for SW in a tie breaker though when he had almost all of his votes by like round 15 or so, and has had almost no support since. I'll have to re-tally, he might still be leading though anyways. |

I'm going to be on the Mercer Band wagon here in a couple polls!
I don't think Shockwave should automatically get the next spot if someone else passes him. There are ebbs & flows for this poll so far - like Interrogator's early love, Mindbender & Outback going from just added to next spot in. I think if someone passes SW, then that person should get in next. With the amount of votes he has already surpassed, he will get in soon though

See, I obviously would vote for him (Kwinn) over many of those other characters. There are many reasons why.
He was an interesting developed character in his admittedly short run during those early comics. He wasn't defined by the black/white good/evil binary that defined many of the early characters. Despite starting off as a Cobra mercenary, he set up the individual moral code and redemption storyline that foreshadowed Storm Shadow's development. He was, for me, one of the most interesting characters in the first twenty issues of G.I. Joe. While I agree that there were three major influences during the eighties (although I'd call it two because Hama created two of them and they worked in conjunction), the cartoon was not influential upon me at all. Because it was so dissimilar to the comic, I never paid it much attention. Therefore, Kwinn's absence in this media is not a factor in my voting. (It is also why I wouldn't have included Duke in my top 30, incidentally). |

Good call on Kamakura getting high ranking, but now we must be talking into the hundreds. That's why I hope this poll will go on forever, it pretty much could. I mean, I'd vote El Jefe and White Clown pretty high, on the other hand you have Whiteout and Double Blast.

(It is also why I wouldn't have included Duke in my top 30, incidentally). You bring up a good point about Kwinn and what I imagine was his inevitable replacement with Storm Shadow. I also think Hama wrote part of his character into Spirit which is why he was one of the only characters able to "get" Snake-Eyes. Those early years were some of Hama's best work until Special Missions. After Kwinn and with Storm Shadow, GIjoe got almost too NInja-y. It was subtle at first and pretty Cool. It was the Eighties ninjas were in, and no matter what Snake-Eyes is still one of the coolest ninjas ever conceived. By issues 70 the comics and the cartoons took on the tone of a marketing ploy for Hasbro to sell toys. This was probably always the intention from the start, but up until then Hama was writing some great stories while including the latest toys. In my opinion Comic trumps all but I can't ignore the Cartoons influence. A character like Gung-Ho or Cobra Commander will always be tied to their cartoon personas. Sgt Slaughter personified GIJOE for a couple years and had almost no Comic development. Duke as well.
