Isn't there an episode where Cross Coutnry is upset because his tape deck is stolen with one of his Jay Z cassettes?
'Nuff said.

I don't think a U.S. toy company would come up with a character that looks like Cross Country today. Unless maybe he were a Cobra.

It wasn't in his filecard, and I don't think it was ever shown on the cartoon or comic, but I always figured that he was into civil war reenactment (based on the hat)...
That does raise the question though if Alpine, Doc, Iceberg, Roadblock and Stalker (and Spirit and Airborne) wondered if CC wanted to "reenact" them back to the fields (or reservation).

At the time when I was a kid I had no idea what it was or ment. I did love watching the Dukes. It's kind of hard to make out what Cross Country's belt buckle is, it's just a white X on a red background. It didn't click with me until I was much older what that and the kepi ment. I just assume that given what CC drives and his code name that he must be Cavalry, he even makes some kind of mention of Jeb Stuart in the cartoon. So you could assume he must of had some family history with Calvary units that dated back to the civil war. There was a time that many a member of the Army's Cavalry units could track back their families history as Cavalry as far back as the civil war and beyond. It was a big heritage/tradition type of thing. Cross Country's family could be apart of that.
It doesn't mean hes racist. He's not wearing white sheets and a pointy hat after all. |

As someone born and raised in the south, I can understand why some consider the Confederate flag to be offensive, and some consider it an important symbol of their regional heritage. I love the flag itself. I like the design, and growing up in the 80's, it was a symbol of pride. I did not associate it with slavery or prejudice. It was painted on the roof of the General Lee, remember (which is named for Robert E. Lee!).
I am still VERY proud to be American by birth and Southern by the Grace of God. However, I will not personally display the Confederate flag out of respect for others who may not have the same feeling associated with it that I do. At the same time, I'm not going to brand someone a racist just because they want to use the flag to show pride in their own heritage. It's kind of a sensitive subject these days, and I can respect that. But for those who try to equate the Confederate flag to a swastika, I think you may be going a bit overboard. As far as Cross Country goes, I think he was just proud of where he came from. The Joe team was about individuals from all branches of the service and from all over the country working together as a cohesive unit. If you have members of an international terrorist organization trying to take over the world, you probably won't sweat the small stuff - like the Confederate flag on your teammate's cap and belt buckle.

I doubt they cared back then. I like the Dukes of Hazzard as a kid. I also remember the character from Megaforce that had the Confederate flag flying from his motorcycle antenna. Back then it was just another way to be non-conformist. I'm also guessing there weren't any black designers of the Joe design team. I never really had a problem with it until I hit college, but Cross Country was a bit too goofy looking for me to be a fan anyway.
