So I've started reading the Snake Eyes Declassified 6 issue series from DDP again, and it's got me to thinkin'. There's little doubt that SE is the most popular and well-know GI joe character ever. From the polls here on the tank to the fact that he has had prominent roles in the movies and his likeness appears on all the packaging, it'd be hard to argue that he isnt'.
But why? As I've been reading the Declassified series, I realized that his story is really only fleshed out in the comics. It's a rather interesting story. And he's a lot tougher in the comics than he ever was in the cartoon. He was just sort of a Joe lackey in the cartoon. But why was he singled out in the comics to have this kind of backstory, and these kind of abilities? Why wasn't Duke, who was more prominently featured in the cartoons? I think I would argue that the mystique is what made him popular, just like Boba Fett in SW. As a first grader, when GI Joe was released, I remember seeing SE in the store, and I wanted that figure so dang bad. Why? I knew nothing about him or GI joe at that point. But I think it was because he was in all black and looked cool, and he had a mask over his face, that I was drawn to him. He could be ANYBODY. (As an aside, my mom wouldn't let me get him, and it was many, many, many years later that I finally got a V1 SE.) So what are your thoughts?

Maybe it was because kids could picture themselves being behind the mask.

his popularity, i think, stems from Larry Hama's comics developing him.
at first, in the Marvel comics, he's just a black-clad mute commando. Nothing special aside from he does meditating in a sensory-deprivation tank. Then, all of a sudden, around issue 10, (iirc) he's revealed to have mystical ninja training that lets him fake out Doctor Venom and escape the brainwave scanner. That's pretty badass and cool. As Larry develops him further, like in Snake Eyes: The Origin and #21, he's seen to be ultra badass and has an interesting back-story beyond 'badass commando soldier'. He got this treatment because Duke didn't turn up 'til later and Hama never liked Duke much to start off, preferring Stalker to be the lead NCO. and he's got a pet wolf. pet wolves are cool. |

Also in every incarnation of GI Joe SE has been a good hero with the heart of a lion and a team player. Personally I prefer v1 SE, when he was just a commando with game. No doubt the v2 ninja back story propelled SE into stardome though. Quote:

Since Larry Hama wrote the comics, and a lot of his own personal experience from being in the military and in Vietnam were used while writing G.I. Joe and The 'Nam, he built up the back story of Snake Eyes, who is rumored to have been based on a soldier he knew. But not only that, the Arashikage connection with Storm Shadow and the time he spent with Cobra Commander before the formation of G.I. Joe make the ARAH storyline predominantly about Snake Eyes.

Ha ha! I forgot about he let wolf and the hot girlfriend! Of course he had the let wolf in the cartoons but not the hot girlfriend.
I've said it before, but I use he comics as my Joeverse, and I agree that Larry did a great job with the SE story. I didn't realize he didn't like duke, but I also like stalker better than duke.

All black commando who is a good guy. I remember when the first kid on the block got a snake eyes. We had no heard of the comic and the cartoon was still a year away. The concensus was Snake-Eyes was the figure we all wanted. Followed by Flash (I guess little kids go for bright colors) and Stalker (in camoflague)

You have to realize that the team were all clad in similar green uniforms. Then, there's a mysterious character clad all in black. Visually, it makes him stand out, and we're all wondering why he stands out, it must mean he's cool, he's different, which pushes us to find out why. Also, the origin was stretched out for several years, in bits and pieces, aside from the major reveal in 26 and 27. His face was never shown until #93, which strun g us along. We kept wanting to see the disfigured face, making us coming abck for more. It's that mysteriousness, the intrigue, the wonder that drives his popularity. Plus, I'll never forget when he took out the squad of v2 night creepers in issue 136(?). That was bad@$$!
