Huge fan of the comic. His story unfolding with time is what made him my favorite. And he's a ninja.

Snake Eyes is the ultimate man of mystery. No name, no face, and no past. Well then they gave us some of his past. He trained to be a ninja with Storm Shadow.
Then came over exposure. |

I found it funny part of his appeal was that "he could be anyone under that mask". And the reveal was the he was another blonde white hero. He's a disfigured mute Duke.

All down to the comic and Larry Hama's character development.
He's mute which means that one has to pay attention to his actions rather than the words, and it's his being an honourable, magnanimous and amazingly skilled ninja (i.e. martial artist) that makes the character for me. Whether it's letting Storm Shadow win to save face with his family when duelling during their training despite being more skilled than him with the sword (Marvel #26, Marvel #126) Or letting Scarlett throw him to avoid showing her up in her first training session with the team (Marvel #27) In fact all the major ninja characters - e.g. Hard Master, Soft Master, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow display similar attributes (skill, judgement, magnanimosity), which are those one would expect to see in a master of the martial arts. |

Points for working "magnanimous" into a toy conversation. My fourth graders would be proud...and generous with their praise. ;)

This thought occurred to me as well. Duke, Hawk and SE all look similar. Yet SE is way more popular, but he was popular before we has any idea what he is supposed to look like.

All of the reasons previously listed in this thread are why we love the ninja commando clad in black. His mysterious past and Larry Hama's development of it creates Snake-Eyes as the SOUL of the GI Joe story.
I also find it amazing that for someone who has had so much bad luck and horrible things happening to him, he could have easily become a villain. Think about his miserable past and everything that has plagued him... from his family being killed on their way to pick him up from the airport, to his adopted ninja clan being destroyed as a result of his joining them, to him losing his face... most other characters who deal with earth shattering things like that usually go "Dark Side" and take out their vengeance on the world. But not good old Snake-Eyes. he has always fought for what was right, despite his pain and what his war against Cobra has brought him.

aside from your thoughts (which are all good reasons), let's see the great difference between comics and toon realizations; the cartoon is based on immediate elements, above all vocal acting; then, it aims to young targets, kids who search a distraction from boring the Saturday/Sunday morning. Comics evolved in time, from simple entertaiment to 1st class storytelling, thanks to many brave and innovative writers (including Hama; never forget the "Silent Issue", aka G.I. Joe #21, is still taken as a mile stone in comic books history); comic books give us more time and chances to understand plots and hints, allowing chars' further exploration. A Real American Hero toon was, more than its comic twin, a commercial operation; only later establishment recognized the possibilities of this media; confront ARAH Snake Eyes with Renegades counterpart and you'll probably agree...
