Never cared for Scoop. Regardless of which you prefer - comics or cartoon - filming a special ops group pretty much defeats the purpose of having a special ops group in the first place. He might be good at his job, but he should be working at channel 3, not with the Joes.
So...why is this guy stuck at SPC? Shouldn't he be an officer?

I grew up on the comics and the Special Missions issue that highlighted Scoop (it was even titled "Scoop") was one of the first I ever read. To me, that was one of the better single issue stories of the entire SM and ARAH line - it was gritty and tough, and showed the veteran Joes in a slightly less sympathetic but perhaps more realistic light. It focused on the theme of the "FNG" and challenges of proving yourself when you're the new guy.
It also showed off the IGs in the field as tough crack infantry, and I loved the way they all looked different, clearly not in garrison. Anyone who is into the realistic military side of G.I.Joe who hasn't checked out the Special Missions should do so. Not all the issues were oustanding, but the best of them were at least as good as the best of the original ARAH run. My only issue with Scoop is his yellow outfit, I always think he'd look better in tan and green. Same with Lightfoot and Airtight. Lightfoot is another Joe who got some solid exposure in a couple of issues - there was the SM issue (I think 13, but I'm not sure) that also featured Outback, Dusty, and Mangler - and this is another of the best issues. And there's that ARAH issue focusing on Joe training where Lightfoot, Budo, and Repeater end up on that op together. Great stuff! |

Airtight in bright yellow is forgiveable when he's wearing a Hazmat suit.

I don't see the marauders (Taurus, red dog, mercer) as "good doers" that fight for justice. I see them being submissive to slaughter because of who he is, his strength and skill. if slaughter was a "bad guy" they would still do his bidding.

Mercer does seem a little dull. He could have been more valuable to the Joes if he stayed in Cobra and just fed them info as a spy.

I always saw the Vipers as more special ops, with the blue shirts being at the bottom of the Cobra barrel.
I also saw Mercer as one lucky and skilled dude, because he was able to escape cobra and convince the Joes to take him in. Not to mention he has to deal with Sgt Slaughter on the daily. As a kid I always pictured him having an epic escape story. The modern figure even has a scar from the ordeal on his right arm. Of course this is all based from my childhood and my current Joeverse. Kind of like the Dinobots in the early cartoons.
