So I've been working on some fan fiction for GI Joe and I started wondering what kind of subject matter would most fans prefer to see in the Joe universe. In other words, although I enjoy a mix of realism and science-fiction/fantasy in GI Joe, I've always found the more realistic military elements of the universe more appealing.
So particular Joes such as Leatherneck and Footloose and Stalker whose uniforms and gear more closely resemble actual uniforms rank high on my list of favorite characters, and vehicles that are closely related or based on real military vehicles (with slight modifications of course) such as the Rattler, Skystriker, Dragonfly, Vamp, Mauler, Tomahawk, Hovercraft, USS Flagg and the bridge layer have always outshined the more imaginative, fantasy-inspired vehicles like the SHARC, Sky Hawk, any of the Battle Force vehicles and most Cobra vehicles. I do make exceptions, but for the most part I tend to fall on the more reality-based end of the spectrum. I still enjoy a blend of fantasy as long as the fantasy doesn't completely break the rules or stretch plausibility too far. Having said that, I'm not interested in Joes and Cobras that are simply straight representatives of the regular ole military but come close to it with slight exceptions. So my poll today is to determine where most fans' interest lie on the spectrum between science-fiction/fantasy and realism. Below are detailed descriptions of the five degrees along the spectrum. Choose the one that most closely suits your interests and the type of Joe universe you'd like to see in film or read about in fan fiction or any fiction for that matter. 1. An anything-goes universe with futuristic technology that may break the laws of science and characters have supernatural abilities. Raptor can bounce around in a Pogo Ball and Zartan can change skin color or morph into another person. Dr. Mindbender can genetically engineer Serpentor or manufacture a BAT or brainwave scanner. Non aerodynamic aircraft like Flight pods and Sky Hawks actually whiz around. Interstellar battles can occur and even time travel may be possible. Mass devices and laser rifles. Ninja mind sets and invisibility. Supernatural feats of climbing sheer walls barehanded and somersaulting over machine gun fire. 2. A fantasy-inspired universe that stretches the laws and maybe occasionally breaks them but attempts to ground the universe somewhat. So Zartan undergoes some experiment that explains his supernatural ability to change skin color and Serpentor is a human clone with DNA from more plausible sources and the Buzz Boar and Pogo Ball exist but with some technical limitations, and Snake Eyes may perform an improbable feat from time to time but can't kill a dozen armed men with a sword or dodge bullets. 3. A balanced mix of fantasy and realism where the less realistic vehicles like Pogo Balls and Buzz Boars don't exist but HISS tanks and Snow Wolves do. And big guys like Roadblock still carry an M2 as a personal weapon, which isn't impossible, though no real soldier would, and a recon specialist with ninjitsu training like Snake Eyes still carries a katana but can't cut through steel with it and throw it like an arrow. Nor can he induce mythological mind sets or climb sheer walls but can still whoop five unarmed guys in a fistfight. Zartan may speak twenty languages but cannot alter his form except through actual disguises and makeup. Serpentor exists but only as a natural-born man whereas Nemesis Enforcer is a figment of the imagination. 4. A reality-inspired universe that focuses on real military tactics and technology with reasonable modifications to vehicles, equipment and standard operating procedures to allow creativity and individuality that makes the characters and vehicles resemble their original depictions but without breaking the laws of physics or plausibility. So an A-10 with a third engine (Rattler), an LCAC-inspired hovercraft (WHALE) and plausibly-designed vehicles like the Snowcat are acceptable even though they don't exist in the real world. So Roadblock may carry an M2 with some assistance (perhaps a sling and tripod) and a pack with a realistic ammo load. Bazooka wears his sports jersey though the real army wouldn't allow it. Snake Eyes may be a student of ninjitsu but has only real martial arts abilities, and he still carries a katana as a special close quarters weapon, though highly unusual for a real soldier. Zartan may speak a few languages, and is still an expert with wigs and makeup but probably not skin masks that you just pull off and put on in a few minutes like you see in the movies. 5. An absolute reality with only real military equipment (Abrams, Apaches, F-18s), although Joe names (Mauler, Dragonfly, Skystriker) may be used, as well as some realistic paint schemes (Tomahawk), and only properly attired characters operating authorized equipment in a realistic fashion. So Roadblock wears BDUs and only fires an M2 from a Humvee or tank, not the hip. Snake Eyes speaks, doesn't carry a sword or uzi, and though not a ninja he is still a very-skilled mixed martial artist with blade training. BATs don't exist. Nor do HISS tanks or FANGs or Rattlers even. Destro doesn't wear a silver mask but perhaps an ancestor of his was confined to an iron mask. Cobra Commander doesn't speak with a hiss and Raptor is a joke. Instead Cobra operates real Warsaw-type or stolen NATO weapons: MIGs, Hind helicopters, AK-47s, Russian-built tanks, etc. You get the point. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 03-17-2014 at 03:03 PM.. |

Great topic, Tanksmasher! I wanted to say 4 or 5, but ended up saying 2. I just have to make room for some of the fantastic elements of GI Joe because of nostalgia or just because I need them to include a certain character or faction. I don't have any set in stone rules myself. If I like something, I can bend reality enough to add it.

I like more realism. I'm okay with a little bit out there. I think, honestly, RoC had the mix I'm looking for, however many other problems it had.

I would like a mix of realism and fantasy. That imo was what The original RAH line was about.

Thanks all for posting. It is interesting to see the range of what people enjoy in the franchise but I thought it would be fun to see how my own interests align with everyone else's. There are some characters that I just can't exclude though they're so far out there, but it's fun to try to create a convincing rationale for their existence in the stories.

I'm right on the 2/3 fence.
Excellent decision to use Snake Eyes and Zartan as primary barometers. Both at times had abilities that made it seem like they'd be invincible, which I find problematic. |
