I was thinking about the Oktober Guard while I was taking a shower this morning (my therapist will have fun with this one), but I think the first issue I got of the Marvel comic was issue 6 or 7 with the Oktober Guard. Because Hasbro did such a good job of using the comics as catalogs for their toys, I learned pretty early that if I saw it in the comics, I'd probably see it on the shelves. I remember thinking how cool it would be to see the OG. Yet I never did. It wasn't until many years later that OG figures were released. My question is --- were OG figures NOT released earlier due to the fact the the Cold War raged on when ARAH was first released? Did Hasbro think that perhaps figures based on Russian characters wouldn't sell?

It might have been that Hama created them at first. I don't think it had anything to do with the Cold War as other companies like Kenner (before getting bought by Hasbro) put out Nazi figures for the Indiana Jones line. They probably just didn't have a market for them at the time. I'm just speculating, there might be a completely different reason. I'll see if I can get my friend to ask his former Hasbro contacts, maybe they'll know.

Not everyone who appeared in the comics made it to the toy line. Even members of the Joe team itself, although those characters were usually killed off pretty quickly. There were 2 Oktober Guard members released in the original line: Red Star and Big Bear
I remember when I was a kid, I actually thought since Oktober Guard was refered to as the Russian version of GI Joe, that meant that in Russia there would be an Oktober Guard figure line instead of GI Joe.

Red Star and Big Bear were '90-'91.
Oktober Guard is teh siht. In the early days of the comic especially, but also throughout the series, a lot of the "non-figured" characters got more play then the ones with figures. Who plays a larger part in the comics? Billy or Barbecue? That always bugged me as a kid, but as a grown man, I've learned to custom figs. Last edited by Stalker; 03-13-2014 at 01:51 PM.. I had made my own versions with duplicate Short-Fuzes, Zaps, Gung-Ho and the like. Sliced up electrical tape made great harnesses and we did have some off brand like the Corps that had a M-60 like MG that I used for arming them along with accessory pack AKs.

GI JOE; ARAH wasn't supposed to be that political. (possibly because original 12" Joe's popularity declined as protests to the USA's involvement in the Vietnam War increased, which led to Joe becoming an Adventurer)
That's why their enemy was a fantasty terrorist organization often armed with fictional weapons. The later Oktober Guard figures came around as Cold War tensions eased, and they could be sold as allies. But early runs of Red Star figures were accidentally released on a Cobra cards because the Chinese factory thought Russian = villain. IIRC, more Oktober Guard figures would've been made, like one a year, but then the USSR broke up. Maybe someone out there has more concrete information? |

This makes the most sense to me. I know that any character created in the pages of a Marvel comic is the property of Marvel. Obviously Marvel had rights to Hasbro's Joe line up for the purposes of making the comic but maybe Hasbro didn't want to pay whatever cost Marvel wanted to create toys of these Marvel entities. I'm guessing something was worked out later as the OG did get a few figures later on.

I've seen it suggested before that Hasbro thought the Guard wouldn't sell.
Hama creating them is no indicator: he created Baroness and look how THAT turned out. All characters created for licensed tie-in comics automatically belong to the parent company: EG: The Guard, Baroness, Billy, Cool Breeze, Mangler et al all belong to Hasbro. Likewise Transformers characters like Impactor, Chameleon, Chuffer, Scrounge, Spanner, Straxus, Tellus and Rotorbolt all belong to Hasbro. Marvel US avoided that by using Circuit Breaker in Secret Wars. They've since done precisely dick with her. Marvel UK also avoided it with Death's Head by having him appear in a single-page strip in non-licensed comics to establish ownership before he appeared in Transformers.
