So I saw the Lego Movie earlier today, and while it was an epic and fun journey through the ages of Lego, there was also a very strong moral message that I for one believe that the toy collecting world should definatley take on board.
If you have not seen the movie, then you should, it is funny and pretty damn smart too. Its basically about A collector who makes a huge lego world in his basement, which he is in the process of completely gluing down - so no one can play with it. The son just wants to play with the lego and make his own things, eventually the dad comes around and they play together happily. I took my little 4 year old brother with me and all I could think about on the way home was everytime Ive ever told him off for messing up my display or the times I have not let him play with my figures.. I honestly just felt like a complete asshole, at the end of the day, these are toys... they are meant to be played with! It is almost the same message toy story 2 Gave us about keeping toys mint in packaging .. I think it is cool to have toys as an adult, but they should always be played with by kids, it really feels wrong when they are not. Thoughts? |

Had a conversation with fiance after we saw the movie. She knows I collect and display, and that I have some high-end pieces. She asked if I would be like that father with our son someday. She was joking around. She knows how I'd be.
There are collectibles and then there is stuff to play with. I'm looking forward to the day can build Legos, or play Joes, with my kid. Just gotta have one first.

The answer is easy, you have the do not touch collection and the play battles with collection.
BTW I love Taco Tuesday!!!!!

I think the biggest thing to remember, using that film as a guide is:
Play with your kids, pass on your imagination to them, but let them have their own imagination. It's not enough to just hand our kids toys and say, "go play". We need to play and bond with them. There are a lot of things that can steer our kids in different directions, I would like to know that something I did helped my children to go in the right direction. Too many people sit their kids in front of the Xbox and Playstation and do what makes them happy. If you have kids, you need to make them happy. I see a lot of my kid's friends, their babysitters are video games. I'm not saying video games are bad, they just need to be regulated. Love your kids, they don't stay young long and what you do will make an everlasting impression on them. Edit... I just saw Sith's comment... he is correct... ALL HAIL TACO TUESDAYS!

It also reminds me of Cameron's line in Ferris Bueller about living in a home where "you're not allowed to touch anything." And his dad just kept his hot rod car locked up in the garage. |

This is why I like to buy multiple convention sets so that I can use them as custom fodder... toys aren't for looking at.

I felt kind of like a jerk at the end of this movie too briefly. My wife and I actually had a talk about it. As a collector I do have a right to my own things, even if they are things that were originally designed to be played with, but with kids involved we had to be fair to our them. My son and daughter were both raised that they were to look but not touch in my collection space. But to be fair with them I make sure to buy them Joe's too. They have joes that daddy has in his collection, and we play with them. I have some joes put back just for the "Backyard" and "living room" play so we can play together and they're okay with that.
When the opportunity presents itself I'll pick them up some joe item that they saw in my collection and said they like. My daugher's growing out of it, but my son's still in first grade so we still have a lot of fun playing joes together. I bought him a 30th SkyStriker for his last birthday and his next one he's getting a Ret Tomahawk. By the way, I thought Lego the Movie was much cooler than I had expected. And was it just me, but was there a subtle "Matrix" undertone in the story there?

Funny, the lesson I took away from the movie was "never have kids, they'll just screw up your toys!" ;)
Actually, the "message" and how it was portrayed was my least favorite thing about the Lego movie - a little TOO overhanded, IMO. And it kinda dragged on for, like, ever. For such a short movie, live-action Will Smith got too much screen time. It didn't ruin the film for me, but as soon as I saw him walk down the stairs, I knew exactly how the movie would end and was a little disappointed about it. Otherwise, absolutely brilliant film that remembered something Hasbro should keep in mind for it's movies - sometimes, a movie should just be FUN. Especially a toy movie. |

This is why almost everything I buy ultimately ends up in my sons' toy boxes. I just can't keep these things from them when I know how much fun they will have.
