It COULD, if kids even gave half a flip about GI Joe to begin with.
This is a moot question since to most kids, GI Joe might as well not even exist.

I've been reading the Toy Wars book, which is about Hasbro, Mattel, etc. and the struggles they've had to get on top in the toy industry. They speak extensively of GI Joe. The CEO of Hasbro, when ARAH was released, wanted something that kids could gain morals from. The Cobras were bad, and did bad things. The Joes were good, and did good things. Clear moral lines were drawn in order to help kids understand right vs. wrong. He also wanted no killing, which is why they used lasers and not bullets, and why you always saw cobra troopers parachuting out of gliders that had been hit with laser fire.
On the other hand, I remember back in the '80s when there were protests about GI Joe being too violent. I think Joe has the potential to go either way. It's all about how you raise your kids. When my kids come across violent content, whether it's Star Wars, GI Joe or Lord of the Rings, we try to teach them that first of all, this is fantasy, and secondly, they should have courage to stand up for what is right, but should also try to make peace whenever possible.

You will have to clarify what you are asking with this thread and question.
Just a reminder, though: 4. No Political Discussion at all. No Jokes, no flash animations, no political signatures, nothing.

I don't speak from any parental experience, but this is obviously subjective. And with all respect to the forum rules about not getting too political, this topic isn't something you can really do justice to without at least recognizing socio-political realities about the world we live in.
As far the whole war/violence thing, I suspect the answer depends a little on whether you prefer to teach kids about conflict in the context of morality (good vs bad); or whether you prefer to depict conflict in more nuanced, perhaps more realistic, ways. It probably also depends a bit on what attitudes you want your kid to grow up regarding the military. Again, entirely subjective. But G.I.Joe is more than a military toy. Especially if you delve into the storytelling of say the comics, you'll find depictions of strong female characters and fairly positive depictions of various ethnic minority groups. In the early to mid '80s the ARAH comic could be argued to have been fairly progressive in certain important ways. I'll also say (like so many other things) that it's entirely possible for something like G.I.Joe to have potentially both positive and negative influences on a kid. |
