I just laughed out loud at the dollar store! People around me at store had no idea what was going on.

I don't think franchise is the right word to use with Hasbro.

GI Joe has been around for 50 years. Last year it had its second major motion picture. People are still talking about it today, all over the world, even in Brazil.
There aren't a lot of toys that can say that. |

G.I.Joe is a franchise that has gone through its ups and downs.
It doesn't have the inherent awesome novelty as say Transformers, and it is loaded with enough national and political baggage in a changing world that it can't be expected to sustain international or domestic appeal for decade after decade. Its strengths have been being flexible enough to change a fair amount with the times and grow with its audience, some elements of terrific storytelling, and the colorful and exciting development of a villainous faction. SW and Transformers are both bigger but I don't think the Galactic Empire or the Decepticons have been quite as broadly imagined and fleshed out as Cobra has. |

As a franchise it's not bad. You've got a large colorful cast of heroes and a large colorful cast of bad guys for the classic play pattern of good guys vs bad guys. With a huge cast if kids don't like a particular character there are still plenty of other characters to chose from. The brand also has a strong fantasy violence feel so it can have military themes without being bogged down in the problems of the real world.
Management of the brand, yea that's not been so good. Hasbro just hasn't found the right way to revitalize or re-imagine the brand the way others have. People said comic books were dead but superheroes found new life when companies figured the right formula for success with the live action films. People thought Transformers would die when it was importing bad cartoons and now look at the brand. As someone else said look at the new life in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As much as I love the 80's part of the problem is that Hasbro is leaning too hard on the 80's. The way forward isn't to appeal to me but to find a way to make the Joes and Cobra appealing to kids. And if the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon is anything to go by then there is a golden blend out there where you can make kids and the geezers happy at the same time. |
