Even as barbie sales have fallen, the barbie model, as you suggest, is still fairing pretty well so i dont see that as the issue. The problem i think is that boys action figure sales have all but fallen off the map in favor of videogames. Which to be honest, are almost cheaper by the time you pick up a couple figures and a vehicle that, odds are good, arent readily available on shelves anyway.
Wwe and tmnt seem to be doing very well, but they have strong media presence and brand awareness that drives those sales. Gi joe doesnt have anything like that and probably wont ever again without a massive overhaul. Not because war cant sell, but because its not selling for gi joe. Sigma 6 didnt win kids. 25th didnt win kids. Resolute didnt win kids. Roc didnt win kids. Renegades didnt win kids. 30th didnt win kids. Retaliation didnt win kids... i mean, theres almost 6 totally different concepts there, with one thing in common--action figure scale--and changing that will drive everyone here, all 100 of you, crazy.

I was in TRU the other day. I was disgusted to see True Heroes getting and entire side of an isle and 2 end caps while Joe gets an eight of a side of an isle. If the True Heroes stuff was selling like hot cakes I'd say more power to them yet the Joe section is always empty waiting to be restocked and the True Heroes, with their mismatchted scale, crap is always full and stocked exactly the way it was the last time I was i there. I doubt the employees are giving the True Heroes isle any extra love so I can only assume it means the stuff isn't moving and IS the same crap that was therefrom last time.

In my opinion (and this is my opinion):
A. Barbie (compared to gijoes) is more open (in terms of continuity and background), not tied to any ideology or idea and more of a blank state. Whereas gijoes will forever be a war toy (always the real American hero fighting the war to protect the good ol USA) Barbie is more malleable (aside from being a blonde beauty, you could make her background virtually open). Because of this parents are more open to their kids playing Barbie. A conservative family would think twice buying toys that are "the epitome of evil" (that's why IMO toys associated with america and its struggle is not much available in the middle east or any other places considered hostile to it, please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm only basing this in my experience living in Dubai for a few months). B. because of item A (and it's parent company eager marketing strategy), Barbie has existed both in mainstream multimedia (tv, games, print and movie / or DVD direct movies specifically) directly (as endorsed by Mattel) or indirectly (hundreds of girly clones like bratz, winks club and the like) so that toy would always be forever embedded in the consumers mind while joes has 2 movies and a seasonal (depending on hasbro i think) cartoons to make consumer remember them. .....I'm not trying to make a political statement or something (just trying to answer the op question) so I'm very sorry in advance if I offended anybody with my answer A. |

Isn't the True Heroes stuff TRU's own brand? Much like CORPS is with Wal-Mart?

Not sure but I believe both products are made from the same company, just rebranded (I saw the tough stuff figures and vehicle lines from Kmart and they look the same as TRU true heroes)
