I'd like to see a GI Joe Universe comic that unites the various GI Joe toy lines.
The story could incorporate everything from the original Joes, to ARAH, to Collector's Special Edition, the New Sculpt Era, Sgt Savage, Extreme, PoC, and even the Joe movies. The idea would be to formulate a coherent and enjoyable storyline that incorporates all factions of Joe, with a heavy emphasis on featuring the toys. Imagine Bullet Man alongside the Road Rebel. Cobra La could be featured too. |

Cobra La could be featured too. Reboots can be interesting, I think. I've warmed up to the idea of ROC, which I still feel is a terrible movie (particularly the acting of some of the cast), and I think it was hard to swallow because I so badly wanted an ARAH story to be translated to the screen, but as a reboot it's not too bad. Extreme was still pretty terrible, but had elements that were interesting. Sigma 6 could have been better but it was done in that annoying light-hearted anime style that irritates me. But even looking at the Sunbow cartoons, which I think were pretty horrible, I still watch them a lot because it's GI Joe vs. Cobra and I enjoy the diversity of such absurd stories and the lore that lingers on from some of the character's file cards. There really isn't a definitive GI Joe back story, because way back in 1964 when the original GI Joe was released he was just that - a soldier, with no back story or history. The imagination of the children playing with these figures created his history. Which isn't to say that this still doesn't occur today, by children and adults, with packaged figures that come with a backstory. You can choose to accept it, or make up your own. There are a diversity of worlds created by the fans that range from integrating WWII Nazis, Jurassic Park/Land of the Lost-style time travelling, Mad Max style post-apocalyptic landscapes, Predator/Alien sci-fi themed space stories, Indiana Jones inspired archaeology tales and Hellboy/BPRD paranormal investigation worlds all utilizing GI Joe and Cobra characters. All I'm asking is that if the right team collaborated to make a compelling and provocative story that could validate Cobra-La, essentially an oddity from the GI Joe universe, would you look at them in a different light? Or better yet, for all those Cobra-La haters, how would you have changed their introduction and backstory to make them more reputable? Obviously, I wouldn't have made Cobra Commander part of their race - it didn't really negate the cartoon version because if you recall, at the time the only history explaining where he came from was confined to the Marvel comics. But it still was a difficult fish to swallow, even without the "continuity" of the cartoons. They're still not as bad as the Intruders at the tail-end of the 12" line, or the 1994 Star Brigade aliens. These were both from other planets; Cobra-La is essentially a "lost race" that is still terrestrial to Earth, although if you want to debate about the origin of life I'd argue that humans aren't necessarily native to this planet.

Not a huge Cobra-la fan, but I would love all the figures remade. Come on and admit it, we would all buy them.

But think about it - an entire race that uses organic life as the basis of their science and technology. There's a thousand different directions that could be taken from that single idea. And it's not like GI Joe isn't sci-fi. From the start of ARAH they always had future tech like lasers and jet packs.

Personally I like my joe/coba straight military. It's the character stories and finding out what made them joe/cobra that interest me most. As for the 3 pack from the 80's I have to agree. Nothing excited me more than getting that 3 pack with Nemesis Enforcer.

Cobra-La gets hate because it was so completely left-field compared to most of the extant Joe stuff.
You might as well have Judge Dredd turning up in Law&Order or Batman pitching up on Murder, She Wrote. Or having Cover Girl turning up on America's Next Top Model. It's insane. |

Maybe if this was some sort of separate comic line it would work, but as established canon in the current comic line it would suck.

I agree that there are a lot of reasons not to like Cobra La (although I'm a fan).
But my five year old son, who is a big fan of all the Sunbow stuff, loves it. And I loved it when I was that age. I wonder if Cobra La would appeal to younger toy users. |
