Way way back in time when Disney had just purchased Lucasfilm there was a rumor that they were thinking of buying Hasbro. I know it was "debunked" but I was curious if it was ever pointed to where it came from.
I don't mean to continue a dead thing but interestingly enough I was recently in Florida and was able to connect with an old friend who is able to come across some Disney information. After talking about all the upcoming movies from their acquisition of Marvel and what we will be able to see in films like Guardians of the Galaxy (which will be awesome!) and the story board/story for Avengers 2 (which I was told will be better than the first without any specifics) my friend was unable to confirm or deny or even comment on Disney purchasing Hasbro. Which is not to say they are going to do anything with Hasbro and it could very well have been my friend messing with me knowing how much I like GI Joe. But still, there are some things that Disney owns that are produced in toy form by Hasbro, including some straight up princess products. It would be interesting to chase the original rumor down to see where it came from.

Likely just because Disney purchased Marvel and Lucas Film, both of which license merch to Hasbro. It is easy to see how someone with a limited understanding of these things could make the leap that the next acquisition would be Hasbro, bundle that with some high hopes for a cash injection into the parts of Hasbro we love and there we have an internet rumor

Collectors saw Disney acquiring those major properties, and simply viewed Hasbro as a "natural" next acquisition since Hasbro made toys for their newest acquisitions. Ignoring the fact that until this year, Mattel still held the Disney Princess and Fairy licenses, non-Hasbro companies did most of the recent movie tie ins (outside Marvel), and the Pixar stuff was split all over the place

These reasons are probably the majority of where the rumor came from. Hopeful collectors and such.
However, the "Hasbro Execs" who were quoted in follow up articles saying that "there was 'absolutely nothing going on that they are aware of at all, in any way, shape or form' involving the two companies" may have been slightly ignorant of the actual facts since there were contracts being looked at between the two companies. In the middle of 2013 it was announced that Hasbro and Disney had come to agreement on new terms revolving around both the Marvel and Star Wars products plus other licenses owned by Disney which would extend the production of those licenses to 2020. 2020 also happens to be the date when the final movie of the new Star Wars trilogy is to be released, per Alan Horn from Disney so it would tie up everything neatly. Maybe a portion of the rumor came from this as well.

It's really not uncommon practice for entertainment writers on Internet news websites to present speculation and rumor of studio deals and corporate mergers and acquisitions as news sourced from "anonymous sources" (particularly those who write under an alias, like the aforementioned "Geek Spy"). It's a no-lose proposition for them: If it gets debunked, they can claim that it was the fault of their anonymous sources or the principals involved got cold feet and scuttled the deal before it became public. If it turns out to be even remotely true, they can then claim that they got the scoop ahead of everybody else. |

I think lucasfilm may have had a large amount of hasbro stock so Disney might of got a huge chunk of Hasbro when they bought lucasfilm.

I kinda wish it was true and they would have a dedicated action cartoon channel and we could get a joe toon for more then a season. A video game would be nice too. Really bothers me seeing Halo and Assassin's Creed figs but no joes. Plus joes would be at Disney stores too, the more stores with joes the better. |
