I know some of us here enjoy the weird and wacky looking vehicles and don't mind them being unrealistic, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who, even as a kid, scratched his head and said "Wait a sec - that doesn't look very practical..."
I'm going to throw out a few classic vehicles with strange design features and make convenient but plausible suggestions for why they look the way they do. Feel free to comment or add your own: HISS Tank - The characteristic high silhouette which makes for a convenient target allows both the driver and gunner excellent situational awareness over the battlefield. The odd tracks which don't extend to the front of the vehicle mean that if the HISS hits a mine or IED the blast is less likely to prove fatal to the driver, and the engine provides some protection for the gunner. The lack of a raised wheel at the back means that on the one hand the vehicle has poor climbing ability in reverse, but this is so to encourage offensive driving and discourage retreat. Furthermore if we image that the rear wheel is the drive wheel, the HISS can lose a track, and the rear wheel will be in contact with the ground and this increases the chances of it being able to hobble off the battlefield, rather than being entirely stranded like a conventional tank. The Maggot has that articulated design which is unconventional for any heavy weapons carrier, and this places great stress on this joint when the big cannon goes off. On the other hand the vehicle can easily split in two and it can be airlifted in two parts slung under two helicopters, whereas it is too heavy to be airlifted in one go by most helicopters. This also gives the Maggot better all terrain ability than any other conventional wheeled or tracked artillery, and Maggots can make their way up steep inclines to higher elevations. Trubble Bubble? I got nothing. Can anyone explain this one to me? If only the jets were centered on the thing instead of hanging on the back. How about the G.I.Joe Havoc? |

Missiles being placed everywhere with out a care in the world about exhaust, much less some sort of launching mechanism, hahaha! Rolling Thunder, I'm looking in your direction.

I always assumed that the Maggot had to drop off the cannon before it could be fired. The front half was just the tow vehicle, kind of like with the Thunderclap.

That's why it had the support legs. It wasn't a mobile weapon, it had to be stationary and targeted.

A few panels from issue 80, Transported in one piece and fired in one piece. Great issue, #80, one of the last good ones of the line.

Maggotts are still firing from a stationary position.

Right, but still on the back of the Maggot, the legs weren't deployed.

Also, there are other panels showing them in motion and firing at the Rolling Thunder. They didn't do much, lol, and he took them all out and ended up driving over the last one.
I wish I had the Rolling Thunder.

When i was a kid i didnt care that the drivers of the havoc faced down. They where just cool toys from my favorite TV show.
Now I try to view the strangeness as a charming oddity |
