I have a very neglected blog that goes into this issue somewhat. Long story short, most Cobra vehicles from ARAH through the 25th make very little sense at all from a military standpoint.

They were pretty awesome from a fun to play with standpoint though.

I tend to think of many of Cobra's vehicles as useful not against Joes and their vehicles, but rather against second-rate militaries in third-world countries. I think of Cobra as using its vehicles to stir up trouble in backwater hotspots, or renting out its vehicles and troopers to governments or anti-government factions in forgotten bush wars.
I think that when viewed in this light, many of the Cobra vehicles are more plausible. A F.A.N.G. doesn't make much sense against a force equipped with anti-aircraft weapons, but it makes great sense for use in subduing a rioting populace, suppressing a bunch of rebels in a banzai charge, or terrorizing a village full of civilians. Especially since, on account of its size, it could be transported on the back of a truck and take off from a driveway. A H.I.S.S. wouldn't stand a chance against an M1A2 Abrams, but it would get the job done against a technical (Technical (vehicle) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)). also, people are always talking about the trouble bubble, but how about the jetpacks?? a dude strapped to two giant engines! how the hell do you land something like that? theres only one way i can think of- face first into the deck of the flagg! strictly kamikaze-style. cobra jetpack duty is a death sentence.

I'm not knocking anyone here. GI Joe first got me into reading about military topics and equipment, which I still do to this day. Trouble is, as I learned more and have aged, I find that I myself need some link to reality. I'm actually happier with the modern HISS, for instance than the classic design. I think I got back into the hobby two years ago at the right time

I always viewed the Maggot as a highly mobile rail gun, not being confined to train tracks it can position itself anywhere. Not a front line "tank " in my opinion.

a technical, hmm? i've never heard that term before.. i love those things! i tried to make something of the sort by mounting a flak on the back of the indiana jones jeep, but it didnt really fit right. so, i put a whirlwind on it instead.. definitely inspired by what i was seeing in Libya at the time. Thanks for the info!!

All the open control stations, missiles attached everywhere, removable pods, etc... are for play factor, IMO and Marvel as basically a drawn commerical made it work. |
