^ Fact. I remember clearly when a kid got killed with a Lazer Tag gun in the Bronx for pointing it at a Cop.

This is why I miss the 80s...you could play army and had real toy guns that looked like the real thing and no one went and cried to law enforcement every time the kids in the neighborhood ran around pew pewing each other....makes me glad I am not ever going to raise a kid in this new brave world of ours...no wonder kids cant enjoy GI JOE...they would be criminalized just for talking about it on the playground...
This was a grown man, adult. Big difference. Does he need to have the book thrown at him or be locked up? Probably not. But its good that people reacted instead of just walking around with their head in the sand. |

I mentioned in this very thread that we were stopped and questioned by the police a few times when we played guns as kids. Mostly they wanted to be sure we weren't using BB guns and out to cause vandalism. Once that was clear they let us play.

Pointing any type of item at a cop that the cop cannot safely identify is beyond DUMB and is going to get you shot in most cases...no matter what you are wearing, especially when your told to put it down and lay on the ground. In the 80s, in the 40s or even today. But this situation is different...this is nothing more then fear of the unknown...which no one is ever going to get right I will say this, if you cos play at any convention I would be very leery of how these things are changing...you do not wan to end up on a terrorist watch list for carrying a plastic toy gun at Joe Con...or wearing military fatigues if your not in the active military/law enforcement...

I completely agree that the the extent to which law enforcement is being equipped and armed in an increasing tactical/military fashion is troublesome on several levels. It's not just SWAT teams either, but regular police. It seems deliberately intimidating, and while it may be intended to prevent crime through intimidation, I worry that it has other negative implications too.
I think it's part of a broader societal culture of fear, preparedness and paranoia that focuses more on responding to bad things than engaging with the root factors that cause them. The US is not a "police state", but it kind of looks like one sometimes. |
