A cautionary tale.
Please read the article link here. Those Comics in Your Basement? Probably Worthless - Yahoo Finance this is not a “the sky is falling” post, just a reality check on how little your collection is really worth. As new Joe stuff comes out the fast money can be made but over time it all falls out of favor and in the end will be worth maybe 1/10th to 1/4th what you paid for it. I do not mind that and just remark to my family, have fun selling it when I die. I collect for my own enjoyment, knowing full well that over time the real value is what I place on it not what I can get for it later. I have seen the baseball card bubble pop, the comic book bubble, the collectable card game bubble, the Hot wheels bubble, the 90's toy bubble, the Beanie baby bubble, and finally the movie toy based bubble. All have come and gone. So just a heads up. Collect what you like and enjoy it for its memories not its future value. So what do you all think?

I regret getting rid of my ARAH collection back in the 90's, but my current collection I intend to keep. I have doubles, one to keep and one to open, only because I like displaying the figures card art. Am I upset that my collection will most likely depreciate in value. Nope. I like my collection for what it is and not for what it could potentially be worth.

Comics took a dive pretty much as the original GI Joe Marvel run stopped. Coincidence?? LOL
I sold every GI Joe Marvel comic made, the inserts, digests, Special Missions, Yearbooks, signed copies, 1-155 and Special #1 etc... for only $500 to pay ONE MONTH'S RENT when I lost my job back in 2003... sucked bad... I did find a guy that closed his comic shop one day and he gave me all the GI Joe comics he had, so that was cool. But like a CD collection, technology enables me to have all those issues and more in digital on my cell phone, computer and iPod. I still have a bunch of issues, I try to help others fill their holes when I can, if I have the issues they need. But, yes, long story short... collect what you love, not for future value. (Remember the guy with the $100K of Beanie Babies?)

I couldn't agree more. People constantly ask me what my stuff is worth, because money is always the main factor in this world unfortunately. To be honest I couldn't care less, I collect for the love of it and the feeling it gives me.

I disagree slightly, as a hole yes most figures will be "worthless" .......but there's always a few gems that will pursued by new and old collectors.

I paid way bellow cost, like .50 cents each for them, and use them all as decorations for holidays and parties. That said I bet that guy is still kicking his self.

That is true. There will always be ultra rare/desirable toys.

I read that article and was nodding my head, because for a few years now, the telltale signs of a hobby that has become an investment for some have reared their ugly head.
Scalpers, exclusives, variants, all contribute to the craziness and eventual bubble burst of hobbies that make people see dollar signs. No finer example than those quoted in the article. I collect out of habit any more.

I remember being suckered into buying the X-Files comics in the 90's because it was when X-Files was just starting to take off and become popular... that was dumb.
Glad I steered clear of pogs. ;)
