Remakes, repaints, have their place. With cartoon and a little marketings it would have survived but not thrived.

Do you mean why didn't Hasbro reuse the same characters over and over again? It's a good question. According to Mark Bellomo, Larry Hama wanted to just re-purpose the first 3-4 years' worth of characters every year, just like Kenner was doing with Star Wars at the time. So, for example, Footloose would've been Grunt with new uniform and gear, Sci-Fi=Flash, Wet Suit=Torpedo, Lifeline=Doc, etc. Hasbro said no, we want new characters, so this is what we have now. You can't really do the same thing with vehicles, they have to be new, although they can be upgraded versions of the originals. Remember, Joe was originally a vehicle line, the figures were secondary, so to speak.

To be fair, the line really began struggling when it began to reuse old characters too often. I don't know if they ran out of ideas or were trying Larry's idea, but Eco Flint, space Roadblock, etc, were not their best attempts at furthering line.
The current run is showing that while there is an appetite for creative and better versions of old characters, there is a limit to how many people will desire.

the reason i think this is a deep question, is that there is so much information to consider before answering this question. i think it would take alot of us tankers to get to the answer. facts, opinions, years of studying this idea. like for instance. if hasbro would not have bought dang near every toy company out their and concentrated just on gi joe and transformers, were would the lines be? i bet we would have gotten, POC figures back in the 90's/early 00's instead of the junk we got during that time period. |

For me, I only like and collect the Sunbow Joes. I've bought them for myself and now I buy them for my kids as well.

i hate rehashes of the same characters incessantly. the Joes are supposed to be the 'new action army'. an army is not six guys and two women doing everything.
