At this point, it would be nice to have new releases of detailed figures consistently available as both modern and retro lines. The case was made for an Adventure Team line which many seem to support, and there is also interest in a Zombie line. There's a lot of directions that Joe can go, but if the line simply focused on rereleasing Joes exactly as they were in the new style articulation, I don't think there would be as much interest. There needs to be something new as well - plenty of us that grew up with Joe back during ARAH would appreciate it, but there is just so much more this line can do. There's even a Jurassic Park 4 coming out - maybe the Joes could go dino hunting again.

I have some "holes" in my collection. They are:
Viper Pilot Tan Grunt Silver Pads Grand Slam those three are also arguably the most desired figures from 1983. Why? because kids and parents really did not like a straight up repaint of a toy back then. "you already have grand slam and a JUMP dear." I had a decision to make back then when the gliders came out. I was in the store and I could get Snow Job and the Polar Battle Bear or I could get two gliders with guys I already had. easy decision. The VAMP mark2 was a tough decision but at that point I was becoming more of a completist. Now when Snake Eyes came out with Timber and then we got Hawk v2 those were completely new outfits. So in essence it was like getting Luke in Hoth gear or Luke in Bespin Outfit. same character but a radically different figure, and therefore new and exciting. The other point that could be made is that the original core group could not be experts at everything. You need a hostile environment specialist, you need a sniper, you need pilots, etc etc. New characters were necessary in that sense. From a storytelling point of view and Hama's own sanity, it would have been so much easier to just write for those first few Joes and Cobras than have to come up with 20+ new compelling characters every year and make them unique individuals. on the flipside, can you imagine Grunt in BBQ's get up? Firefighter Grunt.

like for instance. if hasbro would not have bought dang near every toy company out their and concentrated just on gi joe and transformers, were would the lines be? i bet we would have gotten, POC figures back in the 90's/early 00's instead of the junk we got during that time period.
Now, if you're talking character design, storyline, etc...that's a different animal in a sense all together. It could be argued that the 90's piece of your comment could/should be removed as many factors lead to that era/style of figures and the easiest way to group them all together is...because 90's. As for the early 00's, well the "Collectors Edition" helped bring G.I.Joe back to the marketplace. Once a desire for new items was realized, we were introduced to JvC. Keep in mind that from then to now, there was now "POC Style." We had Joe vs Cobra and T-Crotches, Spy Troops, Valor vs Venom, Direct to Consumer...all before we had 25th. None of the aforementioned offerings had anything "POC" like, so I would say that Hasbro buying up companies has no real relevance to the discussion. It took the 25th coming to light to give us the new construction body style and to also make Hasbro see that the demographic has aged and is/was looking for something more realistic. |

I liked all the different characters, the main reason I liked GI Joe more than Star Wars. Sure Star Wars had a lot of alien characters, but only a few core characters, most of the Star Wars guys only had a few seconds of screen time. GI Joe had a lot of characters too, but a lot more life was inserted into them via the comics and cartoons.
The ensemble cast was one of the strong points of GI Joe. Hasbro overriding Hama on that was a good thing in my opinion. Having second versions was cool, like a new Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, Stalker, etc... but I for one appreciate Footloose instead of a v2 Grunt. I appreciate Sci-Fi instead of a v2 Flash.

As anyone ever gotten their hands on Kirk Bozigian's presentation he gives on the marketing campaign he ran on the line from the start to the early 90's (not sure when he moved away from it).
He goes into detail on how the comic was tied into the toyline as a marketing tool and also on character development. |
