I'd have to say Ace. Ace flew more different types of planes, from FBW based to planes controlled primarily controlled by analog systems like hydraulics. Plus he was an Aggressor pilot. If we are to go by the toy canon, at some point he piloted the GI Joe version of the Rattler(A-10 Thunderbolt III), and later Slipstream's own Joe plane, the Conquest X-30. Assuming that the Conquest X-30 has a FBW flight control system like the X-29 it was inspired by, technically Slipstream has had the easier to fly aircraft. Quadruple redundant digital Fly By Wire(FBW) flight control systems make flying easier than analog flight controls. Slipstream only flew(AFAIK) Conquest X-30's and later the Thunderwing(2 seat F-22) from Valor Vs Venom.
Ace flew the F-5 and F-16 prior to joining the Joes then flew the XP-14F Skystriker, Ghoststriker X-16, A-10 Thunderbolt III, Conquest X-30 and Sky Striker XP-21F. Considering his experience and amount of planes flown(taking into account that they're all substantially different from one another), I think Ace is the better pilot. Ace got shot down in the Special Missions issue but he played chicken with the Strato Viper and wasn't in a good position at all to defend himself. |

Wild Bill was the best GI Joe vehicle operator, period. Followed by Clutch, ACE, then Covergirl. Wild Bill could fly anything, and I you look at other cannon, in Spytroops, they had him driving the patriot grizzly tank even.
Clutch could do crazy things with anything that had wheels. He also caught cobra commander more than once if I remember right. But he is eliminated from this conversation, being he is not a pilot. Ace was the next best comic/cartoon character who also piloted vehicles, and was considered a skilled pilot, although, as several mentioned, he got shot down a lot. Covergirl was one of the few other Joes who was both a driver and had personality. If you look at newer media (DD and IDP comics, movie) she has probably done more than ace, although she gets pushed more now as an intelligence officer more than a driver. Slipstream, falls in the next group of good-not-great characters who also piloted something, with Steeler, Cutter, Slipstream and Deep Six. As a character, he would only be in the middle of that group. Long story short, ACE is a more interesting character and a better read, Slipstream MIGHT be a better pilot. |

For me, it comes down to their other traits to tell me who's the better combat pilot. Who'd you rather have: a guy who's great at video games? or a guy who can read complex situations well enough to almost never lose at poker? I'll take Ace, thanks.

Im gonna throw a wrench into the works. While Im trying to discover my top 10 joes. Slipstream is #5 and Wild Bill is #8, but Flint is #1 with my flyers. But Im partial to Flint living here in Wichita, Kansas. Wild Weasel was my #2 on my cobra list. Tho before Wild Weasel's introduction Major Bludd & the Baroness were "Wing Commander's" for Cobra.
So here's the wrench... Hawk! For a kid growing up during the 80's in Wichita Kansas near McConnell Air Force Base (Yes, that Air Force base where a Dreamlifter accidentally landed at the wrong airport). Then, when I was a teen I was a Cadet in Civil Air Patrol. While Hama wrote characters based on what he knew, the Army. I believed Hawk was or really is Air Force. His filecard says he's a Missile Commander and radar, which to me said Air Force. During the 80's the Titan II missiles were in a horseshoe shape around Wichita which were manned by Air Force personnel. In Issue #4 of the Marvel comic, in Montana he was trying to remember how to fly a jet. Since he probably forgot (lol) since now he's missile commander and a desk jockey as Colonel. In issue #13, he said he was gonna pick them up in the C-130 (with Wild Bill's help). He's seen countless times in the cockpit of a C-130 throughout Marvel. He led the Air Wing during the attack of Cobra La invasion (in GI JOE the movie). His version 2/1986 figure had the bomber jacket of the Army Air Corps, in 1947 that became the US Air Force. Hawk's version 4/1992 talking commander's uniform looked Air Force. He had flying written all over him with the backpack jet packs during the 90's. Then, finally his name Hawk. Tho I admit after I had seen War of the Worlds tv series (in 1988) and Stargate movie (94), that made Hawk in my joe verse definately Air Force. Keelhaul also as honorable mention in my top 20 Joes. He's also another wrench, since he flew F-4's during the Vietnam War. Also he might have served with Hawk in the Air Force, since he's wearing an Air Force t-shirt on his version 1/1985 figure. That's the connection in my joe-verse how Keelhaul gets assigned to command the USS FLAGG. As a teen I really wanted him, I traded my cousins in order to get Keelhaul since they had the Flagg and they didnt want him ;)

Not to derail the thread, but I always wished for more named Cobra Pilots in addition to Wild Weasel. After him it was just nameless StratoVipers, Aero Vipers, and AVACs... yeah I know there was Raven the Strato Viper in the toon, but I mean created for the toyline individual characters. Dude must be a legend in Cobra. The only guy good enough to establish himself outside of his occupation.

By no means was I trying to change canon. I was explaining how my "childhood and teen" memories were of my Joe-verse. My dad was in the Navy and I was a Cadet in Civil Air Patrol, an auxiluary of the USAF. This was before the internet, so most of my knowledge was Air Force & Navy. My dad reminded me that the uniforms were wrong at least once a week. So the only way I could play GI Joe was to create in their respective services and put them in formation when I wasnt playing with them and explain to my father what each ones rank and new designation was.
Since most of the Joes were homages to days of the past wars- civil war, wwI, WWII and Vietnam war. So I had take what I knew of Navy, Air Force and a little bit of the Army and Marines along with the filecards, order of battle and update them in my Joe formation. In my formation, The original 13, CO was Hawk, XO was Scarlett as a Marine Lipstick Lieutenant (WO-1), Stalker was the top shirt. Then in Marvel Issue 33 the Original Joes got a promotion and became base staff. Then Duke became the new Field CO when Hawk was promoted to General. Flint became new Field XO, Beachhead became Top Shirt, the Base XO in addition to pilot is Slipstream (Marvel comic introduction), Ace felt like a Joe asset on call at the air force base rather than in the command structure. Wild Bill being a LRRP during the Vietnam War had some training on the chain of command. Shipwreck lost the arch to be a Gunners Mate 1st Class (I had to scratch off his arch with an exacto knife, since my dad always gave me a hard time "[T]hat no Chief was found in dungarees and a dixie cup). Doc was a CPO Navy greenside medic (serving with the Marines in a khaki navy uniform). Lifeline was a Rescue Swimmer. Lowlight was a Navy Seal sniper because of the Navy watchcap. So in my formation Hawk along with Ripcord and Pathfinder was Air Force (in honor of WW2 Pathfinders, in 1947 became Air Force Pathfinders and eventually became Combat Control Teams). So yeah, to make matters even worse, my dad didnt believe in playing or watching cartoons on Saturday morning when I was 10 years old. So the only way I could play is if the neighbor kids gave me a walkie talkie and I was Tripwire, diffusing bombs as I was taking apart televisions, radios, air conditioners, lawnmowers, washers, dryers, or anything else my dad wanted me to tear apart for his "salvage (back)yard".
