Excellent essay, Monte, and Chuckles is an interesting character in the broad scope of G.I. Joe...
I actually really liked how Hama originally wrote him in the Marvel series, as essentially a CIA spook and almost a liason between the military angle of G.I. Joe and the spy angle of military intelligence. The first time the character was really nicely developed was when Brandon Jerwa tackled the character in the Devils' Due Frontline series, really thrusting him into his more undercover role. However, Devils' Due completely tossed all that great character development aside when Chuckles was summarily killed in the battle of Cobra Island in a one panel emotionless death that really didn't fit the scope of the character to that point. Mike Costa and Christos Gage took Chuckles through the absolute wringer in IDW's "Cobra" series. Monte, you were partly correct that the character got its development in Cobra, but it was far more than just a single issue, he was essentially the central character throughout the first year or so of the entire title. SPOILERS BELOW from the earlier issues of IDW's Cobra Series: He did things that totally skirted law and order, just to get deeper and deeper undercover, and in his final heroic act, he killed Cobra Commander and detonated a bomb that destroyed that Cobra facility (and himself). One thing that hasn't been properly explored (in my opinion) in the fall out of that event is how fruitless his sacrifice really was... Cobra Commander was replaced, and Cobra is almost more powerful now than they ever have been. Could be an interesting angle for a future story. |

Just read your essay Monte, at it is really well put together.
I couldn't agree more at how well 'burg explored the depths of a character that honestly, I never gave two shits about. When I was a kid, I didn't really pay any attention to the back stories of my toys. As an adult, I find the scope of some of history and complexity of the same characters fascinating which only serves to make me love them even more. |

EXCEPT in G.I.Joe. With very few exceptions, in G.I.Joe comics, dead is DEAD.

In response to the actual thread, Chuckles pops up semi-frequently in Larry Hama's current G.I.Joe book from IDW, the book that continues where the Marvel run left off. He is portrayed as a BADASS and has an unusually high body count. That issue has actually been brought up in the most recent issue.
If you look in my signature, there's a link to my Chuckles custom based on his look from IDW's Cobra series. In this series, he is also a BADASS, but he does do some very immoral things in the name of keeping his cover. If you find that sort of anti-hero off-putting, don't bother. For this story, start here: G.I. Joe: COBRA: Mike Costa, Christos N. Gage, Antonio Fuso: 9781600105357: Amazon.com: Books Then get Vol.2, skip vol.3 (it's a good story about Scoop but there's no Chuckles), then get Vol.4. If you want to make sure you have every little part of his story though, just get this. G.I. JOE: Cobra: The Last Laugh: Mike Costa, Christos N. Gage, Antonio Fuso: 9781613775233: Amazon.com: Books Get it now before it becomes a prime time HBO series one day! ;)

The essay is great - very well written and well-thought-out, and right on all points (i.e., I agree with everything you wrote).
As far as my thoughts on Chuckles, I never really cared about or even thought about the character, until I read the dio-stories at the link below, just as I was getting back into Joe: Cobra: "The Inner Sanctum" Two of the dio-stories - Operation Rapier and My Brother's Keeper - prominently feature Chuckles. I have no idea who created the dio-stories, and they aren't perfect. But I'm a big fan of the way they portray Chuckles. (I realize this post is not exactly responsive to the questions asked in the first post, but I hope the dio-stories are nonetheless new and interesting to some Chuckles fans).
