Anyone here play or have kids that play Skylander or Disney Infinity?
Apparently this stuff is huge. It seems to be a cash cow. GI Joe's rich universe seems to be a natural fit for the concept, plenty of characters, you could even add vehicles. Instead of statues, you could sell action figures as they are now, but with the RFID chip inside. |

DESTRO & I have talked about this topic a lot. It would definitely be a cash cow for Hasbro. Plus, just like you said, sell the figures with the chip either inside the figure or inside the figure stand.

sticker shock.
I love Lone Ranger I thought the movie was great, and I saw the Disney Infinity figures as I made my Kreo rounds at Toys R US. I wanted those figures until I looked up and saw that these two figures were 34.99 for the pair. They are really nice figures but I could not see paying for a game I would not play. I of course am not a kid. However at this price point, Unless a kid saves up his/her allowance, It will be up to the parent to make the purchase. I imagine other collectors may feel the same way and get really selective in their purchases. It definitely would be a way to change the brands focus. It would tie in perfectly with an Adventure Team theme being bandied about today as well. A game based on worldwide adventures, hunts, searches, quests, roleplay, and other missions that follow that theme. No overly popular games out there based on that concept. A nonviolent Adventure video game...there's an unique idea.

It looks like most of the figures are anywhere from 9.99 to 13.99
And they are definitely selling at those prices. |

And what makes it all the more surprising is that this coup was pulled off by a company (Activision) that had virtually negligible experience in the action figure/toy industry. I don't know if Hasbro could find similar success if they applied it with GI Joe, though. They'd have to pony up for a top-flight, AAA video game to go with the NFC-enabled action figures, and if Hasbro's past ventures into GI Joe-branded console video games are any indication, it doesn't seem like they have the resources, expertise, or existing game development partnerships to do so. And even if they did, they'd just be a Johnnie-come-lately, trying to pick up Activision's and Disney's leftovers. What Hasbro really needs is to be first with new and innovative ideas to leverage their properties, whether in video games, toys, television, film, and other media. But that's so much easier said than done. Last edited by zuludelta; 09-22-2013 at 02:10 AM.. |

There is a ongoing debate about the GIJoe line being supported by the interest of children or not. I don't think there is any question that the Skylanders/Infinity lines are supported by children. Adults too, but children are where their focus is. Given that, how many kids would see a GIJoe in that form and want it? More likely they would say "I don't know what that is" and pass on it. The GIJoe collecting community is getting smaller all the time so I don't think they could properly support it. The only way this might work is for Hasbro to to get all of their character trademarks together in 1 system to get multiple types of collectors to support it. Transformers would be a must. In that environment, GIJoe could possibly survive. Even then, I am not sure how far it would go.

Honestly it would most likely end up being nothing more than a knock off of Skylanders. It could be cool but I'm afraid it wouldn't be done right.

Trying to combine the functionality of the Skylander concept with the articulation, sculpting, and accessories of a modern G.I. Joe figure would probably translate into $20 4" figures. I know some folks would have no problem paying that, but I'd get REALLY selective at that price point, and the figures themselves would have to be absolutely stellar.
Not saying that the idea isn't something Hasbro should look into, just noting that it'd probably have to be a Skylander "barely articulated/accessorized statue line" and a separate action figure line...which doesn't necessarily help the action figure side of things get any better, as the kids buying the Skylander-esque stuff would quite likely have no interest in the non-Skylander stuff. If Hasbro starts exploring this route, we'll see it happen with Transformers before we'd see it with Joe. Marvel and Star Wars would probably not happen because Hasbro doesn't hold the video game license for those brands. In fact, the whole concept is a bit of a pickle for Hasbro, because Hasbro is not a video game company...that means the video game portion would have to be licensed out, and the developing company would probably want a "cut" of the action figure proceeds, too. So...may be quite a while before we see something like this from Hasbro. tl;dr - Might be good for the brand, but probably not so good for what existing collectors tend to want/demand. Has some problems because Hasbro is not a video game company. Last edited by Jmacq1; 09-24-2013 at 10:37 AM.. |

I said in 1995 that a pwer of the force game would be coming where you only get to play as the figures you have bought. It seems like a scummy gimmick but who am I kidding, if the figures filled any holes in my collection I would get em, then I would get the game ...them I would sink 1500 hours into it getting all acheivements then boom da gasser, crashin da bosses hayblidder, den banished.
