I've been wondering about the insignia on Flint's beret, what is it exactly?
His file card says that he's had SF training, but he wears a black beret, not a green one. So, does anyone know what the insignia is supposed to be or anything? |

Dude, good question. I'm anxious to see what our fellow nerds can come up with. I always thought it was just a Special Forces thing...

He's a green beret as far as I know. They just got the color wrong on the figure.

Hmm, I'm not fully sure so I'm going to suggest another tanker can offer assistance but there was a website that gave the meanings of G.I. Joe insignias.

Flint's actually not a green beret (which is weird) while Falcon is.

As to the flash on his beret, most comic book artists have drawn it similar to the 1st Special Forces Group unit insignia (seen here). It's the wrong thing to put on the beret, though, since the Special Forces unit insignia is different from the Special Forces beret flash (as can be seen here). |

Flint is a green beret (the term green beret is simply a colloquialism for "Special Forces"), or is at least qualified to wear a green beret given that he underwent went Special Forces training and presumably served with a Special Forces Group.

After digging around the internet some, it seems that the insignia can be used on the beret, but it must be placed within the gold-coloured 1st Special Forces Group beret flash (in most of his comics appearances, the beret flash is coloured red for some reason, and the unit insignia extends beyond the shield outline of the beret flash): |

So even though the decision to originally colour his beret black instead of green was probably an error on the part of the artist/designer, you can easily rationalize why Flint wears a black beret (back when the figure was first made, black berets were restricted to Rangers, while the army as yet didn't have a standard beret headgear... and even though Flint is also Ranger qualified, it's a faux pas to use the SF insignia on the Ranger beret). |
