It looks like a lot of fun but I can't overcome that initial step of showing up in a homemade costume. The people involved seem kinda cliquey too. You would think they would try to aid people into the pastime....what are your thoughts and experiences.on it?

Considered going to the 2012 NOLA con as a Cobra Trooper, decided against it and still went to NOLA. Just before the Con, I was in Galveston's Col Bubbies, my fave surplus store. The costume as I had it planned would've consisted of: 1. Helmet (Surplus US Army) ($50 at Col. Bubbies) that I would've 2) Spray painted blue (15 bucks a can at Houston's Bering's) , 3. Army pants, blue camo ($40 at Col Bubbie's on the Strand) also needed suspenders, boots and socks. I decided the cosplay would be too expensive and I'd probley spend alot on the con exclusives any way.

Yay.
But only if you look good in an all black, skin-tight, catsuit and horn rimmed glasses.

I really really considered being big boa next spring when I hit training hard enough to pull it off, and I have never saw anyone do big boa before

I like GI Joe cosplay but I don't have the knowledge to build the outfits I would like to do.

Yay.
I did a Cobra trooper recently. Also, nobody starts with the skills or knowledge on how to craft costumes etc. Takes time and practice. Im still working in it. |

Last year I cosplayed as Dialtone (Jack Morelli) Mission Brazil style without too many accessories, just a handheld radio and strap/holster, a red beret threaded though the black shirt epaulette, a sweater vest, ems slacks and combat boots. I got props for "cosplaying", because they would never cosplay. But yeah most of the Joe characters are tough to make at least 80% of the costume since its just acquiring the pieces and not "making" the costume. So it's tough to be in cosplay competition as a Joe.

Footloose, Flint and a Cobra Trooper or any of the OG13 would be the easiest to do. Especially a Vietnam Snake Eyes/Stalker, and General Hawk too would be pretty easy although expensive for the leather jacket.
I dressed up like Footloose and Flint a few times as a kid and even in high school for Halloween. Dang near everything you would need you can get from US Cav, Serving Military & Police Professionals with Boots, Packs, Uniforms and Tactical Gear - U.S. Cavalry Sometimes you can find a lot of the same clothing at the sportsmans guide for a lot cheaper, The Sportsman's Guide - Hunting & Outdoor Gear, Shooting Supplies, Military Surplus, Survival Gear and More! I'm surprised those two are still around, I bought my stuff from them waaaaay back in the early 90's. There are tons of helmets on ebay, you can get the real ones for around 30 to 60 dollars, depending on the type and age. Best bet might be to get the toy/abs knock offs from china sellers. From what I've been told those are made for airsoft players. The 82 to 86 series would be the easiest to make costumes from, 87 and on there are a few each year (like Falcon, Shockwave, chuckles would be crazy easy) that would be easy to find all the clothing and gear for from real military items. |

Cosplay is a ton of fun as long as you have a good attitude. If any Joe fans make fun of you for dressing up and supporting your interests and hobby, they need a reality check.
