It does depend but if you can pull it off, go for it. Its a ton of Fun. I'm finishing up TDK Bane for NY Comic-con then I'm going to work on Retaliation Roadblock.

EDIT:
1. No trolling, or flaming. Any form of personal insult is a no-no. As a basic rule of thumb: if you think that what you are about to post is insulting, don't post it. No posting with the intent of starting "Drama". If you feel the need to start trouble, go elsewhere. -SM Last edited by Steevy Maximus; 08-27-2013 at 01:15 PM.. Reason: Inappropriate comment |

Then it is a simple matter of folding. Takes a little practice though. The rpf forums are also chock full of tutorials

If it's just to have fun. Okay. If it turns into some pissing contest, NAY. Some peeps took a geeky activity and turned into an (even more) collosal waste of time.

Joe cosplay is probably among the easier to do. An investment of a couple hundred dollars or less can get you a passable original 13 costume that requires no skill to make.

Nay.
Just kidding I've done a good deal of GI Joe cosplay even though I was doing it before people took the word cosplay from Japanese costuming. I was also doing it before you started to see a lot of GI Joe costumes at cons. Storm Shadow, Cobra Trooper, Flint, seems like there is always some idea I need to get around to. While there is the occasional snob out there most costuming people are really nice. We tend to talk about ways to improve a costume but it's not as a way to be mean but as a way to help people make their costumes even better. Kind of like when a customizer gives you an idea on how to make your custom figure really pop. While I haven't been to Dragon Con in a few years I know GI Joe costumes were getting pretty common there and everyone I ran into was super super nice. Even a small local con like Con Carolinas has more GI Joe costumes each year. Honestly don't worry about the few bad apples in the barrel because there are so many good people that costume. Heck if you are stuck on ideas just post for help and someone is sure to have some great ideas you haven't thought of yet. Trust me if I can pull off Flint when I'm often confused for an Asian person then pulling off GI Joe costumes isn't the hardest thing in the world. Heck I had friend borrow my GI Joe beret for a military costume and people thought she was a GI Joe character so the standards aren't super high. Things only really get viscous if you go crazy into competition level costuming. |

My wife and I cosplayed at NOLA's convention but did not have the time last year. It was enjoyable. Everyone in costume comes up and asked where you got this or how you built that. We did the same. Regular people want pictures with you, the celeb guests want pictures with you. Kids love pictures with you.
I have two favorite photos someplace. One is of a boy dressed as Sgt Slaughter putting me in a hold and another is of my wife and I posing with a card back behind us. There are "purists" and you will know them because they are in clubs with strict guidelines like the SW's groups that march in parades, attend sporting events, etc... Then there are those of us that just want to add to the Con experience. Getting the gear: shop around - look at airsoft dealers. You dont need real kevlar helmets plus unless you are used to wearing one all day on patrol, then you will get sore and tired from wearing one at a Con. Most of the 80's gear can be found cheap at surplus stores and online as mentioned earlier. Shop around. Do try to get the right look though when capturing the character. When I was Flint, I wore a black beret, black shirt and multi-cam pants. People instantly figured it out. I threw on my body armor with some shotgun shell holders and people thought I was Flint from Resolute or based on fan art. Most of the characters have key elements to their look. Try to replicate those. Just putting on a white gi and a black belt will not make you appear as Storm Shadow unless you are being very precise as him in the comic, training in Japan... most people will not get it. Make yourself a pack that can carry some arrows, hang two ninja swords and paint the thing black and you are half way to a decent SS. Add a Cobra symbol and you are almost there. Do take note on where you plan to attend if they have prohibited items. I suspect most places will frown on actual firearms, for example and may even frown on painting the orange tips on toys or airsoft. Knives and swords may not be allowed if sharp and pointy. JoeCon did not publish much guidance last year for the costume contest and I was surprised at what I could probably have gotten away with especially after talking to the police that were working the Con as guards. |
