So I begrudgingly accompanied my wife and nine-year-old daughter to a $1 screening of Rise of the Guardians...
And I loved it! But this isn't a review. Instead, this is me making a counter-intuitive suggestion: Moving forward, G.I. Joe should be all-CGI. Understand, please, first of all: I. Hate. CGI. To clarify: I love Pixar's films (back when they produced something other than sequels, anyway), but I am a defiant advocate for practical effects in live-action films, and I'd take any number of stupid Baroness-Duke-Cobra Commander back stories to get rid of the embarrassing CGI in some of the worst scenes from The Rise of Cobra... But watching Rise of the Guardians, I realized, as I first did when watching the Imagi Ninja Turtles flick, that when done right, CGI is the most liberating option possible for action scenes. Combining live-action with CGI is frequently disastrous, but if you stick with CGI... Here are two samples of what I mean, from the wildly underrated Bolt and Rise of the Guardians: Make the character designs marginally less cartoony, and I think you'd have a template for a potentially kickass G.I. Joe film. DISCLAIMER: I am aware of the straight-to-DVD Joe films that were A. CGI and B. Lackluster. What I'm talking about here is big-budget, state-of-the-art CGI. Wincing in preparation for a beating, I ask you... What do you think? |

It would always be just a cartoon if animated. Not an action flick.

I too hate CGI, but I definitely think it's a very valid thought. I couldn't understand for the life of me why Transformers Prime was created in a very popular 3D/CG style but Renegades was reduced to a sub-par looking anime.
I believe the first key to recapturing Joe's target demographic, is to put them in a context that is appealing to kids. This very much includes 3D animation, and a really well designed video game.

the problem is that if a joe toon went cgi it would be low budget toon cgi. Personally I prefer non cgi shows as do a lotta people I know.

I've thought the same thing about the Justice League. I'd rather see a movie that looked like the trailers for "DC Universe Online", where they could go crazy and do anything and have the characters look exactly like they do in the comics.
I'd easily go see a G.I. Joe or Transformers movie that was done the same way. I'd have lower expectations for it, thinking it would be more for kids, but I'd still enjoy it. Then they'd get away with using some off the wall storylines like they did in the original mini-series, with stuff like a MASS Device or Weather Dominator. It'd be less real, but more fun. |

It's funny but I thought the opening action scene for Bolt would have worked perfectly as a Cobra scene.

I loved the Final Fantasy movie with the alien spirits, the critics hated it, but it's one of my favorite sci-fi movies.
