agreed. The editing on Tales was terrible.
If they would do as mentioned in a previous post and take fan fiction there would need to be some pretty stringent guidelines. I personally don't think GIJOE translates to the novel format very well. The type of characters that the Joes and Cobras are...well they are are not very deep characters. I don't think they were meant to be. They were meant to be two dimensional characters. Yes the Cobra comic has certainly taken a different look at them as well as Hearts and Minds. But does it work? Does it feel like you are reading a Joe comic, or does it feel like you are reading a spy novel that just happens to have people with GIJOE code names.

You people don't think Max Brooks copy edited Tales from the Cobra Wars, do you? If by "the editing was terrible" you mean there were lots of typos or small errors, well, that isn't what it means when it lists him as "editor." Copy editors don't get bylines.

I used to have those GI Joe Find Your Fate books when I was a kid. Those were a blast.

Without having seen the unedited drafts I wouldn't be too down on Max Brooks. It's not like he was working with professionals.

Hasbro should let anyone with a good pitch for ANYTHING Joe related give it a shot. Anything positive for the brand is good news.

I have the young adult short novels that were done in the 80s (R.L. Stine did one) and they were fine for what they were. A bit more of character psychology but for the most part Sunbow episodes in written form.
Have they done those DK reference type books or sticker books? Those help get kids attached to a brand. A Kreo-based video game akin to the Lego games could work. My son loves the Lego video games. |

Maybe that is why Carlos Guzman makes so many editing errors. Trust but verify.

I don't think you understand the difference between "editor of a fiction anthology" and "copy editor." Nobody is paying Max Brooks...nobody can probably AFFORD to pay Max Brooks...to go over the proofs with the "blue pencil" and find all the typos and grammatical errors. That isn't what he was hired to do and would be a gross misuse of his time. His job was probably more along the lines of selecting writers and making sure the anthology had a consistent tone and feel and so forth, not to check for typos.

I find it interesting someone would pay somebody to just glance over something unfinished, that to me seems like an even more gross misuse of time. Hmm on second thought that sounds more like IDW just wanted to attach a well known name to something, more of a PR move than anything else. Editing without actually editing...I need to get that kind of job. back on point, GIJOE just does not lend itself to novella type storytelling. It is not that deep. I found Tales from the Cobra Wars had good stories but at the same time it just felt odd reading them in that manner. diff strokes for diff folks as they say.

It's just that there's many different kinds of editing. When something is listed as "edited by" it doesn't mean they copy edited, but it does mean they probably put a lot of work into pulling the thing together in an organizational sense. He certainly read the stories, but presumably the publisher has professional copy editors to do the boring detail work.
There's also the fact that once a work reaches a certain length, having perfect copy is essentially impossible. Certainly it's a goal to strive for, but functionally, errors are almost always going to creep in. |
