Yes they should give it a try! -This brings in fresh new ideas of Gi Joe "granted these writers have a general knowledge of Gi Joe mythos!" Outside of this topic; Hasbro should let BBI Elite Force make some of their Gi Joe & Cobra vehicles on a trial run (..man I would love to see this done; an actual two seat Gi Joe Sharc like in the cartoons but true 1/18 scale)!

No! Like all licensed properties they would end up being written by hacks. These hacks write generic men's fiction novels and when they get a contract for a license they change named and a few details. Max Allen Collins' terrible ROC prequel novel is a perfect example of this. The characters could have been any group od soldiers. He through in some named and no more research than reading about five or six file cards. It could just as soon ended up an able team novel, or star wars.

Eh, I'm not adversed to the idea by any means.
I just don't think there is much of a market for it (not that I think such a thing will garner any traction from collectors either since it will probably be a "stand alone" thing that most will ignore because it isn't ARAH)

I liked it. It would be cool if there were more like it or something like the Star Wars EU books.

You know what else was good? Like, surprisingly so?
The first issue of the Rise of Cobra comic book prequel series. I spotted a collection of those stories at Hastings recently for dirt cheap, and sat reading it in the store waiting for my wife and kid to finish shopping, and the first issue, featuring Duke on a jungle mission, was pretty damn engrossing. |

Of course it comes down to who you get to write the books and who you get to be the continuity chief. Star Wars, all the novels have a line editor that makes sure everything stays in continuity (except Lucas can overwrite whatever he wants). Do that with Joe and it could work. If you just let anyone go to town and create their own playground, then yeah, it'll be a mess.

Why not? The writers would be confined to not killing off characters unless they were probably created in that novel or series. CC would always escape at the end just like in the Sunbow cartoons. I read the SW series for a few years about 12 years ago, I liked them, they passed the time while on shift and when there was nothing to do in Bosnia.

I've had this idea for a Joe reboot/alternate universe for a while that would probably end up being 3-6 novels.
Only reason I don't get around to seriously writing it is because I feel like Hasbro would get pissed or something if I tried to do anything with it besides post it here. |

If you just let anyone go to town and create their own playground, then yeah, it'll be a mess. Star wars also has a lot more people who are passionate about the property. Out of that pool they can get a higher quality of writer. Star wars also has more money to hire talent. If g I Joe hired writers they are going to get the quality they got for tales of the cobra wars. Besides max Brooks have you heard of any of those writers? I hadn't and I managed a book store for the better part of a decade. I'd love the idea in theory, but in practice it will end up churning out harlequin quality products. It would be a money grab by hasbro and some publishable hacks. It would end with writers who liked joes, but can't write and writers who wrote executioner novels and changed the names.
