An emblem. A unifying symbol. Cobra's always had one. The Dreadnoks got one. Destro's IGs have one. The sub-teams had one. The movie Joes have one.
But the originals always lacked the symbol. G.I.Joe with the 3 stripes doesn't count, because it wasn't a symbol so much as the name stamp. Similar to how the Armed Forces will have the branch name around but there's also a seperate symbol for each service and then patches for the different units. Why didn't the original have that? Now the Eagle Shield of the movie is cool, but it could have been alot better. Some kind of eagle shield would have worked for the original ARAH line. A unifying symbol is common to have, sports teams, organizations, etc.. all have them. Even companies come up with something that symbolizes the name (either a logo or the company name stylized). So why didn't Joe have one? The 12" line came up with the AT for the Adventure Team. So why didn't the ARAH?

And it looked strange when they started putting it on the figures (in the VvV/Spytroops years).
The logo is fine, but it doesnt work as a symbol.

I like the eagle logo from the movie. It kind of reminds of Snake Plissken's bracelet in Escape from New York.

I have to agree with that assessment. There's something about having your own icon that gives your movement, group, organization- whatever an immediate power and recognition. The Nazis used the Hypnotic Swastika in a white circle with a red background which gave the visual impression of a new order rolling over the old ways with a new idea of unity and progress...The Soviets had their Hammer and Sickle giving the impression of Strength(Hammer) and Sickle(Cultivation) of a new and powerful, inescapable, way of molding the people to a specific fighting and work ethic in which the people supposedly could put their trust in. The Japanese used their Red Sun, which of course what could be more powerful than the Sun...giver of life and light, giving the impression of a New Dawn rising with an unconquerable spirit and will.
Such Symbols are essential to the manipulation of Masses and in the instilling of a sense of unity. Cobras Symbol (albeit) a cartoon-based ideology still did what the Cartoons writers and Animators intended-Give an Impression of Evil(The Snake) and Power(The Cobra itself is one of the Most feared of Snakes) in Red-The Color of Blood, and of Sacifice. Sadly the Joes lack of a Unifying Symbol made them slightly Generic.

Now the Joes are supposed to a covert unit, so not having a unit symbol makes some sense but then they had the US flag and the G.I.Joe w/ stripes all over the vehicles so that gets rid of the covert excuse...
All military units have patches specific to that unit, why not the Joes?

Ahhhh, True enough, I forgot about the covert part, but there should'a been something at least other american divisions should'a been able to discern from them from average military forces.

All military units have patches specific to that unit, why not the Joes? There are two ways of going about the matter of a GI Joe unit insignia, in my mind: - They don't have a distinct insignia, in keeping with covert ops practices. They'd just keep wearing the unit insignia of where they were originally detached from prior to joining the GI Joe team (i.e., Stalker would still have his 75th Ranger Regiment flash on his beret, etc.), or something even more generic, like a subdued American flag patch. - Alternatively, if they have to have a unit insignia, I'd prefer something more in keeping with traditional military heraldry similar to the ones seen here. Brands and logos used by socio-political organizations, on the other hand, serve a much wider purpose of propaganda, marketing, and advertisement. As such, they necessarily employ elements that "speak" to a wider range of populations. |
