I have a question, and sorry if this topic has been done to death..BUT..having read the two volumes, is it me or are there any tankers who are miffed that the original joes faded into obscurity, not taking into account hawk, scarlett, snake-eyes..I mean, we dont see flash for a looooooong time and when we do he gets exploded..same deal with breaker, last time we saw him WAS the last time we saw him...didnt it bother anyone that when these two died no one batted so much as an eyelid in the joe verse? yes they had the funeral after the civil war stuff..anyways, i am getting side tracked. Again, it's as if the originals were all but forgotten, and for me they were what made joe fun to begin with, I hope IDW gives them more due.

It bothered the heck out of me as a kid, but in retrospect, there wasn't really much Larry Hama could do about it. Part of the conditions for him to write the comic book was that he had to feature a certain number of new characters and/or vehicles every issue. That Hama was able to write good stories (at least up until the Millville/Trucial Abysmia storylines during the late 1980s/early 1990s) while still writing the comics as basically a long-running advertisement for Hasbro's toys is quite an achievement.
The good thing now is that as far as I know, Hama and fellow writers Chuck Dixon and Christos Gage have a lot more creative control in the current IDW Comics. |

I think this is true, and I'm really enjoying the new comics, especially what Dixon and Atkins are doing, but don't forget that Dial Tone is now a woman and that came down from Hasbro. Dixon had written in a new female character and Atkins had already drawn the panels when Hasbro decided they didn't want any new characters. So, more creative control...yeah, probably, but maybe not enough. |

Definitely agree with you on this one. That's actually why I bought the two volumes (I've long since lost any of the comics I had as a kid). I wanted to relive the Joe days when the original thirteen were all that we knew of GI Joe. It's also why I've read GI Joe Declassified about a dozen times. I think sometimes we forget that those original thirteen really had character and were interesting in their own right even if they all wore matching green fatigues.

Do you know how many letters were published in the back of the comic complaining and asking Hama to kill off Joes to make it more realistic?
So he did and then was swamped with complaints about who he killed. No matter who gets killed, there will always be that one guy who was like, WTF? You killed the White Clown?!!!! |
