In my Joeverse, before i went ninja only, the Joes were the cream of the crop of existing Special Operations Commands. They didn't need seasoning or to go through any additional training. They were already high speed/low drag. So they do a couple of milk runs to get accustomed to working in the unit and then they are off and running. I didn't have joe "green shirts" anything too menial for SFOD-GIJOE would be done by rank and file soldiers whereever the joes happen to be.

No Greenshirts. Joes are already the best of the best and to be selected for the team means you already stand out in your original units.
Even the Joe support staff is combat-ready. It's a lean, mean, self-sufficient unit. The support roles are where the secondary MOS come into play. There's a lot of downtime between missions and the Joes need something to do.

Yeah, with a large force of Green Shirts, the Joe's just become another branch of the Department of Defense and have to start questioning why they are around. What is the point of them then?

In my Joe-verse the SB's are kind of like the regular army. Cobra has devastated militaries and economies from around the world to the point that the few remaining special forces left band together to form the "Joe" group. The SB is like regular army supporting large scale assaults or any non-cladestine ops. The exceptional ones are selected to be Joes.

in my Joeverse, the Steel Brigade are a network of undercover operatives manning safe houses and covert bases in various locations around the world, with aid from the CIA.
A few Steel Brigades get to join the Joes when they're reformed in 1995 after the 1994 shut down. The Joes go through a selection program, though, just like any other Spec Ops unit has them - based on the comic story. |

even with 20 or so greenshirts, around two dozen Characters, 8 SBs, 10 blueshirts made from DG shippys, My entire team is still around only two or three platoons depending on how you break them out.

Steel Brigade was always just you and me... since the original concept was a self created Joe.

Joes are picked from the best of the best- get a code-name based on the MOS or Special Skills- or whatever mood whoever hands that out is in I guess... then hit the training. Most wash-out (Jodie, Ice-Pick, Bad News, Funky, Desperado and Blister.... you losers will NOT be missed) but the best (Repeater, Light-Foot, Budo) become awesome action figures! |

The idea of greenshirts originated in the cartoon, not the comics. Issue 82 had probationary Joes, They met most of the qualifications on paper but they were not quite joes yet.
Greenshirts in the toon makes sense when you have a zillion cobras that all look alike and only a couple dozen GIJOEs to go after them. It made for good screen presence. It was probably also a lot easier on the animators. "Just draw 20 guys that all look alike running next to Scarlett, Duke and Snake Eyes." It also made the heroes seem that much better than the rest. You only saw them at Joe HQ or in battles that called for a lot of personnel. The Joes in the comics seemed to just work alongside the regular military most of the time. Take the issue where Ace Slipstream and a Night Raven spar and you see how they both treat their ground crew.
