I've been reminded a lot lately of bits of backstory, random lore, unique characters and/or ongoing plots we built up around our GI Joe and Cobra figures when I was a kid, and I'm always fascinated by the stuff others came up with for their Joes when they were kids. It could be character backstories, custom figures, blending of elements from Sunbow, Marvel and file cards, lore built up around specific weapons or vehicles, etc. So this thread is to share your childhood Joe lore. Here's a few of mine (Some of which I've recently posted on other threads) to get started:
-Flint and Falcon were brothers, rather than Duke and Falcon being half-brothers. I actually didn't realize that we made that up at first, I thought that was official lore until quite a bit later. -Cobra Commander was Chris Latta CC but also had the used car dealer background. He wasn't Cobra-La since that was a retcon from previous Sunbow lore anyway, and we didn't have the Movie. -Firefly had first applied to join the Joes, but they turned him down for being too mentally unstable, so he went into the private sector. -Extra 1997 Snake Eyes parts with urban camo Corps! pants became a short-lived Cobra character named "Snake-Bite" who viewed himself as Snake Eyes' arch-nemesis, but was in reality just a moron. -My older siblings had decided Duke was a lecherous idiot because they thought Tiger Force Duke looked like Bill Clinton (This was around the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal). As they aged out and I aged in, TF Duke gave way to 1993 Battle Corps Duke, and through the cartoon and other factors, our Duke quickly became a veteran Sergeant who kicked butt. -The 1991 Grunt rifle and neon Eco-Warriors blasters were frequently Cobra super weapons, like the guns at the end of Men in Black. |

firefly works for both sides. he goes where the money goes and will change teams for whoever is paying, sometimes even in the middle of something.
"joes just paid me, gotta blow your shit up." "cobra just paid me, gotta get destro out of the pokey" same thing goes for pretty much all the "cobra" mercenaries. destro specifically (i was reminded by that by a later comment in this thread) when i was a kid, night vulture played the part of nemesis enforcer. we often substituted characters for figures we had for figures we didnt, or werent made. that's the one that stands out the most. When I was young, we were too poor to get most vehicles. My mom found the Revel model of the MOBAT on sale and got it for us. We built it and used it for our Joes. The opening at the top was just a little too small to fit any of our Joes except for Torpedo, so... Torpedo had a Classified military specialty of tank commander.

I always explored more of the DESTRO/LADY JAYE family connection from the cartoon, and Rock N Roll and Scarlett were a couple. I also had Destro helping the Joes behind the scenes more because he didn't agree with CC's End Of The World scenarios. Major Bludd was the only one of Cobra 100% loyal to CC.

There was a period where I forgot who the Action Force figures were (I got them when I was about 5 and then Transformers came along two years or so later and occupied a lot of brain space and I didn't have the comics, only the fan-club audio adventure to go on) so when I got the first GI Joe/AF figures in 1987 and I only had a pair of Cobra troopers and a CG to go with Flint, Snake Eyes, Footloose and Airtight, I would use my SAS Force Stalker as a Cobra that I dubbed the 'Black Death Guardsman' The Black Death Guard were some kinda Cobra elite commando force that were better than the Crimson Guards and didn't hang around pretending to be accountants and lawyers.

My Steel Brigade figure (Top Job) was the bestest Joe ever, much to my younger brother's chagrin. Other than that, most of our playtime consisted of Cobra attacking the Joes' base. No characterizations, just shoot-em-up action.

Zartan was a military experiment. He was exceptionally gifted with holograms and technology, per the Marvel comics, but he literally could change colors and disappear because of his skin. Then he enhanced his gift with costumes, accents, holograms, masks, etc.

Firefly was a ninja or at least was trained as one.
Beach Head also knew ninjitsu and was just about unstoppable like Snake Eyes. Pretty much anyone wearing a mask/balaclava was a ninja. This is still true to this day.

-Headhunters was how Cobra Commander appeared in the inner city when he was helping out Headman.
-Falcon and Zarana were star crossed lovers (didn't own Mainframe) -OG13 Hawk was a young Duke instead -I didn't have Scarlett so the backstory was that Snake-Eyes met Hot Lips in Vietnam and they became very close instead -The MASH Team were active in Vietnam with the Joes and later joined GI Joe. Since I didn't have Doc, Hawkeye and company were my medics. -Firefly, Wild Weasel, Track-Viper, and Boba Fett were good friends from their bounty hunting days, and Boba Fett frequently worked for Cobra -4-LOM and IG-88 were new types of BATs developed to help Overkill -It's "wartime", so Captain Stubing anfd the rest of the Love Boat crew staffed the Flagg under Admiral Keel Haul. Since he was an admiral, Captain Stubing commanded the ship. -Isaac and Roadblock knew each other when Roadblock worked as a chef on the Love Boat before joining GI Joe. -The GI Joe team's chief rivals were the A-Team. -Mr. T and Sgt. Slaughter were rivals. The Marauders and A-Team joined forces alot -Ryu and Ken were part of Storm Shadow's ninja clan -Guile was ex-GI Joe but left over leadership differences with Duke. he was currently training Falcon. -M. Bison, Headman, and Cesspool were all subordinates of Cobra Commander. Together the formed the Four Bosses -Dr. Mindbender and Golobulus together created Goro to be the ultimate enforcer to Serpentor -Baroness was Cobra Commander's sister, and played Destro like a fiddle for her brother -Lady Jaye and Destro secretly desired each other and didn't realize they were related -The Dreadnoks were part of Shadowloo, and answered to Balrog -Vega and Slice were partners (since I couldn't find Dice in stores). They later teamed up with Sub Zero Last edited by IzzyTipsy; 05-21-2024 at 06:05 PM.. |

This is pretty much how a thought growing up also. I vividly remember seeing WORMS and said ?great another ninja to the ranks?. My last and one of my favorite cobras was Alley Viper. He was a not a trooper but super ninja and destroyed all my joes from the past. His shield was his weapon of choice.
