Somebody's day just got made. They say the thing is more powerful than a Tomahawk missile at a fraction of the individual projectile's cost. I'll need a side-by side comparison of a ship hit by a missile and ship hit by a railgun projectile, personally.

its pretty cool to read about but it sounds like its biggest issue is what makes it work, and the production of HEAT!

That's the problem right there. Until they find a way to dissipate heat quickly and efficiently, and a material strong enough to withstand said heat for repeated firings, these suckers won't be seeing widespread use for a while. Power isn't so much a factor, I think, since a railgun will like be primarily ship-based.

its weird ive never seen a weapon with that kind of backwash...its not even safe for crew members to be near it, Ship based does look like the way to go tough. On the 76mm cannon on the ship I was on we had an ammo elevator we fed and its basically like a giant machine gun belt. People on the bridge aimed it, and the crew members are safely away from the gun in the belly of the ship loading it. So some kind of configuration like that could work. Id imagine you'd need welding goggles to watch it though.

I meant in the traditional sense NO-one could be around it, even more so if it was on the ground. Probably melt the dirt around it into glass, lol. Plus imagine the heat protection loaders would need to keep this thing fed, or swap out the melted rails. What gets me is the velocity, sure people would probably see the heat sink coming but its so fast you could never out maneuver it.

Im wondering if there is a way for the satellite to show you what you are aiming at, and you just have to lock on, the beam would travel out of your sight but the satellites live images would show you what was happening, from a birds eye view of course not direct LOS.
Its quite possible. Though it would probably be schematic rather than live satelite feed for ease of use/clarity. I'd have to do more research, but I don't think that's out of the realm of possibility. Quote:

Why anyone would be standing near the business end of a ship's gun in the first place raises questions, but yah, you don't want to stand near one of these. Though for all that backblast, I would HATE to be the sucker on the receiving end of a railgun. It could probably tear through most ships with disgusting ease, given enough of a charge. But that's not the worst of it. This thing could, assuming MGS and Ace Combat have even the slightest base in reality (they do... sort of...) be used to deliver nuclear weapons or any other form of nasty party-crasher faster and sneakier than any missile could, as are the case for Metal Gear REX and AC6's Chandelier, or complete denial of airspace, given a large enough network, as shown by Stonehenge in AC04.
