The IDW comics continuity really got me thinking about how great a mature themed G.I. Joe live action series would work on television.
What fascinated me the most about G.I. Joe growing up was all the specialized characters. I loved how there was an expert for every terrain type, e.g.: -arctic/ polar (Snow Job, Iceberg, etc) -desert (Dusty) -mountain terrain (Alpine) -underwater (Torpedo, Deep Six, etc) -jungle (Recondo) -etc Also, many of the characters were specialists in a particular field or military branch, e.g.: -intelligence/ counter intelligence (Scarlett, etc) -technology (Mainframe, Dialtone, Tripwire, etc) -flamethrower (Blowtorch) -laser (Sci-Fi) - hey, I thought that was cool as a child anyway- -heavy gunner (Road Block, Heavy Duty, Rock N' Roll) -Marines (Gung Ho, Leatherneck) -Navy SEAL (Wet Suit) -Coast Guard (Cutter) - etc. And not to mention all the interesting vehicles and their drivers (e.g. Scrap Iron, Toll Booth, Cover Girl, etc). Nowadays, when I catch the cartoon on the retro toon channel, I cringe at how horribly lame the show was, but at the same time, I still have a fondness in my heart for the characters and the general story. The two live action movies were just OK, but I don't feel like they captured the true essence of character specializations, and the plots seemed rushed and empty. I feel like there is niche market for a revamp of the G.I. Joe story in the live action genre, but if it were to be done, it it should be done correctly. Here's what I would love to see happen: I'd love to see a well-made, realistic, gritty, live action TV show based on the G.I. Joe/ Cobra range of characters. What I envision is completely different from the futuristic movies, but is more grounded in reality. What would be fantastic is a show that combines the suspense and terror threat of '24' with the military action of 'Call of Duty', and the episodic structure of 'Lost'. Let me explain that last bit about Lost. The show Lost, in its early seasons, focused on the back-story of one principal character per episode, while at the same time, weaving together a very intriguing overarching main plot. I think a Joe show that is aimed at mature viewers, and which follows a similar structure as Lost could work extremely well. Have each episode focus on one particular character's background or specialty, while unraveling the nature of the mysterious 'Cobra' threat (and dealing with it) serves as a general overarching plot for the series. I envision Cobra being an enigmatic, yet realistic, terrorist threat that holds behind-the-scenes influence in the political scene. This is in contrast with the cartoony, wussy, unrealistic portrayal in the 80s cartoon, and far more in line with the IDW continuity. Cobra would have their hands in a wide variety of evils, like slavery, drug and human trafficking, biological weapons, governmental corruption... How cool would it be to watch a live action show in which stuff like this happens: Flint, Beach Head, Tripwire and Scarlett infiltrate a Cobra drug operation, only to get caught and brutally beaten and tortured by Major Bludd and his insanely tough vipers. Snake Eyes and Stalker mount a rescue mission in which Snake Eyes 'ninjas' through the vipers and takes down the rest down with uzi fire, while Stalker locates the captives and covers their retreat. Major Bludd, sensing all is lost, torches the facility in order to destroy it along with the Joes. But then Wild Bill swoops in with his chopper, and Rock n' Roll and Heavy Duty lay down cover fire while the rest of the Joes crawl to the chopper in the knick of time... I used an action episode as an example, but the show I envision would be much more that that. It could be quite cerebral, actually. Battlestar Galactica was gritty, but they kept the blood and gore to a minimum. BG was a military show with overlying themes on humanity, and was very well done. A show about Joe and Cobra could work the same way. There could also be different enemies other than Cobra, however, Cobra would be the main antagonists, always present behind the scenes--- kind of like Sherlock Holmes' nemesis, Moriarty. How about you? Would you like to see a Joe show of this nature, say on HBO or AMC? I realize it would not likely happen because, let's face it, the franchise is owned by Hasbro, a toy company, and their primary focus is on selling toys for kids. But I think us adult kids need some love too. |

As long as it wasn't on a network.

Or Starz. If they did a Hulu exclusive, it'd be cool.
Arrow isn't R-rated and its amazing. (Hate at your own peril). If they could somehow revamp the brand with this type of action and story, I'd love it. As the live action. As far as animated, Resolute was a slap in the face to me. They were killing icons for no reason and it was a jerk-off for ninja fans. I think if the studio that did Afro Samurai/Black Dynamite/Boondocks (and Spawn I think) got it, they'd focus on what made Joes who they are. Plus amazing animation. Either way, story over stars. Arrow made me believe in network television again.

It wouldn't sell toys so it would never happen.

I'm all for it! I doubt it will ever happen though; but if it ever did, this animated series would have to be given a guaranteed slot for "x" amount of episodes (..so we the viewers aren't left hanging)!!

I just imagine all the characters on "The Unit" were really Joes. That's as good as it'll get.
Cable tv is garbage now. Anything on the pay channels is essentially just porn with a story. The best show on tv is "Hannibal" on NBC. They'd better pick it up for next year, but even if they don't, I'd be happy with one spectacular season. |

I would like it. But I don't think hasbro would go for a live action. They have a fondness for animated shows they can directly market toys with.
But At this point, I would be happy with any type of show. |
